[11448] DARIUS HEFLING, physician, Gilmore, was born in Harrison County, Ohio, in 1836, son of Fielding and Sarah Hefting. He obtained his education through his own exertions. He learned the carpenter and millwright trade before he was twenty years old. After that, he worked almost day and night at his trade for several years. He then read medicine with Drs. S. R. Magee and McNavy, of Deersville, Ohio, for some time, and finished reading with Dr. Street, of Tippecanoe, Ohio. He attended medical lectures in Philadelphia, 1860, and graduated from the Medical College the same year. He then engaged in mercantile business at Tippecanoe for about eight years. After this he commenced the practice of medicine, and in one year moved to Newtown, of this county, residing there about two years ; he then came to his present residence, where be has been practicing since. The Doctor was married April 2, 1863, to Mary McConnell, daughter of John and Jane McConnell, of Harrison County, Ohio. They have five children, three of whom are living-Ida M., Cora D. and Herman C. Mrs. Hefling is a member of the Disciple Church. The Doctor is a Mason and an Odd Fellow, is having a good practice in his profession, owns the only drug store in Gilmore, which is based strictly on temperance principles, and also owns forty-seven and one-half acres of improved land, besides his village property.
