[35013] I believe Amon's parents died soon after they were married and Amon was adopted by his grandparents, Daniel Shipley and Cornelia Eleanor Burnsworth. There is a marriage record, but no further records after that. They were married shortly before Amon's birth and there is no further record of them. The grandparents had a person living with them of Amon's age from 1830 on. It was normal in those times for grandparents to adopt the orphan children of their children.

In the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, Ammon Shipley, 32, a carpenter, born Ohio, lived with Susan, age 34, born Indiana, and three children: Peter L., age 6; Sarah M., age 4, and William Henry Harw?, age 2.

In the 1860 Census in Jackson Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, Aman Shiply, age 40, born in Ohio, a carpenter, appears with his wife Susanna, age 43, born in Pennsylvania. Both could read and write. Their children were Peter L., age
14; Sarah M., age 13; William H., age 11; David, age 9; Almira J., age 7; Edward M., age 2, all born in Indiana.

An Elkhart County marriage index shows that William H.H. Shipley married Mary E. Lawrence(?) April 25, 1863.

In the 1870 Census, New Paris, Jackson Twp, Elkhart Co., IN, Amos Shipley, carpenter, age 52, b. Ohio, had property valued at $150. His wife, Susan, age 54, b. Ohio. William, age 22, was a carpenter. Mary, age 22, (probably his wife) was b. Ohio. Alonzo, age 19, was a farmer, b. IN. Robert, age 9, b. IN., Ellen (probably William's daughter), was 5/12 (born in March of 1870.

Per the 1880 census, Ammon Shipley's father was from Pennsylvania and his mother from New Jersey.
