There was an Alexander McConnell who died at Octorara Creek, Chester Co., PA in 1729. He had as least five sons, including one named Alexander McConnell, Jr.. Alexander McConnell Jr's wife was named Mary McConnell, and she died in Guilford, North Carolina in November 1796. One of Alexander and Mary's daughters, Martha (McConnell) Lackey, left a will in Guilford Co., NC that mentioned Walter McConnell as her nephew. She probably adopted Walter McConnell after his parents had died. All of the sons of Alexander McConnell, Jr. lived and died in Lancaster Co., PA.
As a nephew, of Martha Lackey, Walter could be the son of either John, William or Samuel. William and Samuel both appear to have either died or disappeared soon after a 1769 tax listing in Drumore Twp, Lancaster Co., PA. While it is possible they were alive in 1773 when Walter was born, I think the most probable father was John McConnell, who was the son who survived until the 1780 tax list but who died before 1790. One indication that John McConnell is more likely the father is that Walter named his only son Washington J. McConnell. I think the J. may stand for John, which would name his oldest son after his father in accordance with naming customs.
It is noteworthy that Walter McConnell told the 1850 census taker he was born in Lancaster County, PA, which appears on his 1850 census.

For each district a constable and assessor were appointed. David Peebles is appointed in Mr. Bruce's district for the present year (1783) and Justin Knott constable for the same year. (David Peebles' son, Lewis, had a daughter, Patsey, who married Col. Walter McConnell, who was the father-in-law of C. N. McAdoo.)
Calvin Xicks McAdoo, my grandfather, was born on the old family estate near Alamance Church, October 22, 180), and attended Caldwell Institute in Greensboro, and engaged in the mercantile business here after leaving the Institute. He formed a partnership with his cousin, David Scott, and the firm of Scott & McAdoo was one of the first to engage in business here. He was married to Isabella McConnell, the only daughter of Col. Walter
McConnell and Martha Peeples McConnell, March 7, 1839, the ceremony being performed at the McConnell home, four miles east of Greensboro, by Rev. EH Cariithers. Col. Walter McConnell came to this county from near Harrisburg, Pa., when a young man, and engaged in farming, and conducted several large tan-
yards in this and adjoining counties. He married Martha, a daughter of Capt. Lewis Peeples and Jane Hicks Peeples.
Col. Walter McConnell had one son, Washington McConnell, who married Mrs. Garvin, of Rhode Island, and they had two children, Dr. Charles McConnell and Lola McConnell McLeod, who now live in Boston, Mass. Col. McConnell built for his son, Washington, the large brick storehouse on West Market Street now owned by Mrs. C. C. Gorrell, and built a home for him, also, on West Market Street, now occupied by Mrs. M. A. Winstead.
The store conducted by Washington McConnell was, before the War, the principal store in Greensboro, except the store conducted on East Market Street by my grandfather, C. N. McAdoo.
Washington McConnoll died in St. Louis, October 21, 1865. My grandfather. Calvin X. McAiloo. and wife, Isabella McConnell McAdoo resided at their home at the corner of Gorrrell and Asheboro Streets, and their children were: Walter David, born January 28. 1840; Martha Elizabeth. born May. 1842, died September 20. 1843: Victor Clay, born March 25. 1845. died November 5, xxx and William Calvin, born May 25, 1848, died April 8, 1878.
