He was married to Catharina KURTZ (daughter of Jn. Christian and Elizabeth KURTZ ) on 2 Oct. 1787 in Frederick Co., MD.
^October 2, 1787. Frantz Herder & Catharina Kurtzin proclaimed. Witnesses: Conrad Herder. George Adam and Christina Kurtz.^(1)
I believe that George Adam was Frantz's half brother, and Christina is more than likely the sister of Catharina. We have here a very strange story, however. In the records of the Monacacy Lutheran Congregation and Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick Co., Md. Appendix ll, Pastor Krugs includes the following in notation of marriages 1775-1787 which are entered on the obverse of the last leaf and on the rear end paper of Vol. l. Apparently these are notations of marriages that were canceled, delayed, or occurred in other congregations.
^1781 Franz Herder and Susanna Kettemaemmin. procl. 23, 25, 26 Dec.^
This led Byron Harter to believe that Frantz's marriage to Catharina Kurtz was his second marriage and that Susanna had died. However, Kitterman researchers tell me that Susannah lived to a ripe old age and bore nine children. Furthermore, it appears that the Harter and Kitterman families moved together to VA, and Susanna and her husband, Johannes Fishburn, apparently went with them. There is more! A letter written on Dec 26, 1830 was found in an old secretary that had been willed to John Robert Fishburn. In this letter was the information that Susannah was born 2 Mar 1760 and died 27 Nov. 1826 in Allen County, KY. Most importantly, it stated that Susannah Kitterman and Johannes Fishburn married 12 March 1782. ...... This was just two and one half months after she and Frantz had proclaimed their intention to marry!!! There must be an interesting story behind these events, but it is unlikely that we will ever be able to do more than speculate what the story may contain.
There is little additional record of Frantz in MD other than his witnessing of two sister's marriages and his appearance in the 1790 federal census of Baltimore. After the extended family moved to Virginia about 1791/92, however, we can follow his dealings. On 4 Oct. 1794 Frantz and his brother, Christian, purchased land on the north fork of the Pigg River in Franklin County, VA2. According to tax records, Frantz was taxed for 105 acres between 1795 and 1800. On 3 Apr 1802 Frantz deeded his 105 acres to Christian, and moved to Montgomery County, VA where on 14 May 1803 he purchased 290 acres on both sides of the West Fork of the Little River from Guy and Hannah Smith for the sum of 200 Pounds Sterling3. This land adjoined land of Benjamin Weddle, whose daughter, Sarah, married Frantz's son, Jacob. One corner of this property was in Mill pond and one boundary ^up a meandering creek^ from the Mill pond. On 1 June 1809 Frantz purchased another 80 acres in the area of Mill Creek from Baley Carter for 100 Pounds Sterling4. (I assume Mill Creek is the ^meandering creek^ of the first purchase.) On 6 July 1812 he sold 31 of his 290 acres to Solomon Harmon for $625.
The first account of the arrival of Frantz and his sons in western Ohio comes from an notation in an old Harter family Bible, which reads, ^Francis and sons arrived Maple Swamp, January 9, 1817. David settled Northwest.^ Maple swamp was an extensive flat, poorly drained area North of New Madison (then Fort Black).... some of the best farmland in Western Ohio. Apparently satisfied, Frantz returned to Virginia and on 23 August 1817 sold the 80 acres on the Mill Creek to Jacob Harter, probably his oldest son, for 80 Pounds Sterling6, and 280 acres to Henry Hance for the sum of $6007. The land in Western Ohio would have been covered by some huge Maple, Hickory, and Oak trees; at the age of 59 Frantz began to carve a new farm from this virgin forest. His land in ^Maple Swamp^ remained in the family 145 years and was the home for six Harter generations8. In growing up I passed through this area many times without knowing that I was related to the Harters who lived there.
Frantz HARTER and Catharina KURTZ had the following children:
Jacob HARTER.
David HARTER.
Samuel HARTER.
Adam HARTER.
Christian HARTER.
John HARTER.
Isaac HARTER.
Solomon HARTER.
