Robert McConnell may have served as a private in Captain Donn's Co. in the War of 1812.
1830 Census, Letterkenny Twp, Franklin Co., PA.
1 M 30-39 (Robert), 1 M 5-9 (John), 1 M 0-4 (Robert S).
1 F 70-79 (Mary, Captain John McConnell's widow), 1 F 30-39 (Grizelda), 1 F 10-14 (Mary Ann), 1 F 5-10 (Jane), 1 F 0-5 (Harriet).
His wife, Grizelda, died in 1832 and was buried in the Rock Springs Churchyard in Chambersburg, PA.
By 1840, Robert, his brother David moved to New Cumberland, Tuscawaras County, Ohio.
1840 Census, New Cumberland, Warren Twp, Tuscarawas Co., OH
2 M 40-49 (Robert, David), 1 M 15-19 (John), 1 M 5-9 (Robert S).
1 F 80-89 (Unknown), 1 F 20-29 (Mary Ann), 1 F 15-19 (Jane), 1 F 10-14 (Harriet), 1 F 5-9 (Grizelda).
Both older men were employed in commerce. It is possible the 80-89 year old female was their mother, but it is believed she moved to Freeport, Armstrong Co., PA by 1840.
1840 Census, Richland Twp, Henry Co., OH. This township later became part of Defiance County, Ohio.
1 M 40-49 (Robert). Total family members given was 5, but only Robert was marked.
His occupation is given as "navigation of canals and rivers." It is possible that the business of the two brothers involved navigating boats on canals and Robert was away on a business trip when he was counted in Henry County, Ohio. Most of the people counted near him were single people but the total family members of each one were higher numbers. So they may have all been travelers staying in a hotel.
Robert S. McConnell, Robert's son, died June 26, 1842 at age 14 and is buried in the cemetery adjacent to New Cumberland in the Big Springs Cemetery, Dellroy, Carroll County, Ohio.
It is unclear where John McConnell, Robert McConnell's son who was born in 1823 was in the 1850 and 1860 census. He could not be located. However, he was in an infirmary because of mental illness in the 1870 and 1880 census, so he may have suffered from mental illness much of his life.
In the 1850 Richland Twp, Allen Co., OH census in 1850 Robert McConnell was living with his daughter Jane and next to his daughter Mary Ann (McConnell) Goble. His daughter Griselda (McConnell ) had died in 1850 before the census and her husband was a few households down on the save census page. Mary Ann's daughter, age 1, was named Griselda Goble after her mother.
In 1860 he lived alone in Union Twp, Hancock Co., OH.
In 1870 he lived with his brother David McConnell in New Cumberland, Tuscarawas Co., OH.
Robert McConnell died October 14, 1873. Robert McConnell and his brother David are buried in the Big Spring Cemetery, Dellroy, Carroll County, OH. This cemetery is adjacent to New Cumberland, Tuscarawas County, Ohio since New Cumberland borders Carroll County, Ohio.
