For detailed information about discoveries related to Captain John McConnell's DNA, look at the notes for his father, Robert McConnell and notes for Captain John McConnell's wife, Mary Dawson.
John recruited a company of soldiers for the Revolutionary War from the members of the Rock Springs Presbyterian Church located 4 miles north of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Reverend James Lang was the first pastor. The original church was a long structure, built in 1743, but has been replaced by a beautiful old church, surrounded by a stone wall adjoining the graveyard. In this church, the old fashioned pews have individual doors on which are inscribed the names of the original pewholders.
John McConnell was elected Captain of the Company known as the 1st Co., 4th Battalion, Cumberland County, Militia, serving from May 1, 1780 - August 29, 1782. Pennsylvania Archives, 5th Series, Vol. 6, p. 200-206 and 308.
