[20452] For detailed information about discoveries related to Captain John McConnell's DNA, look at the notes for his father, Robert McConnell and notes for Captain John McConnell's wife, Mary Dawson.

John recruited a company of soldiers for the Revolutionary War from the members of the Rock Springs Presbyterian Church located 4 miles north of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Reverend James Lang was the first pastor. The original church was a long structure, built in 1743, but has been replaced by a beautiful old church, surrounded by a stone wall adjoining the graveyard. In this church, the old fashioned pews have individual doors on which are inscribed the names of the original pewholders.

John McConnell was elected Captain of the Company known as the 1st Co., 4th Battalion, Cumberland County, Militia, serving from May 1, 1780 - August 29, 1782. Pennsylvania Archives, 5th Series, Vol. 6, p. 200-206 and 308.

Rossana married William Lowther in 1809.

1 F 45+ (Mary), 1 F 16-25 (Margaret), 1 F 10-15 (Elizabeth).

Margaret (McConnell) Robinson was married and died before the 1815 will was written.

Will Book C. p 456. Will of John McConnell, Letterkenny Twp. written 28 Dec. 1815, he died 14 Aug 1817, and the will was proven 20 Oct 1819. Wife Mary, Sons Robert, David and John McConnell. Jacob Cassel, Christian Foltz, Benjamin Keefer. Codical dated 5 Dec 1816. Wife is to get the largest looking glass in the house.

Per the 1820 census, Mary Dawson McConnell, Captain John's wife, appears to have lived with her son David McConnell in what was Captain John McConnell's household.

1820 Census, Letterkenny Twp, Franklin Co., PA
2 M 26-44 (David & Unknown), 1 M 16-25 (John), 1 M 10-15 (William M. Robinson).

This is the former household of Captain John McConnell who had died in 1817. David was the head of household. The three children of Margaret (McConnell) Robinson, who had died before 1815, were mentioned in Captain John McConnell's will.

Per the Orphans Court, Book C, Page 407, the administration account for the Estate of John McConnell was approved and $1,522.69 was in the hands of accountants for distribution to heirs.

By 1840 Mary Dawson McConnell moved to Freeport, Armstrong County, PA to live with her daughter Rosanna McConnell Lowther. She died in 1845 and is buried in the Freeport Cemetery, Freeport, Armstrong Co., PA.
