There has been a debate among McConnell researchers concerning the descendants of Robert McConnell, his son Captain John McConnell and also questions regarding many other Franklin County McConnells. Thanks to new discoveries by Terry Cowan and discoveries through DNA research, we have now resolved many issues that were previously uncertain.
Robert McConnell's son, Captain John McConnell married Mary Dawson. Mary Dawson had a sister, Jane Dawson, who willed property to Mary Dawson and her descendants. The Jane Dawson estate papers (will written in 1836, codicil in 1837, proved 1846, administered 1860) document exactly who Mary Dawson's children were and where they lived as late as 1860 when the will was administered. You can find more discussion about the estate papers by looking at the notes for Mary Dawson, Captain John McConnell's wife. This documentation provides clear proof of the identity of the members of Captain John McConnell's family and the locations of his descendants. Using this information it was possible to trace back to a currently living descendant, who still carries the name Dawson to this day. His name is John Dawson McConnell, and through his assistance we were able obtain his DNA.
The DNA results for John Dawson McConnell show that the DNA for Robert McConnell and his descendants is among the R1B haplogroup (the main two groups of DNA on the Clan Donald website are R1B and R1A). This is the largest and most common DNA group in Western Europe. It is in a classification called the Yellow Subgroup on the Clan Donald website. This subgroup is a mixture of various families that were not unique enough to separate into smaller groups. The DNA sample for John Dawson McConnell is labeled J.D. McConnell. We also obtained DNA from descendants of Francis McConnell (d. 1769). We have the DNA from Francis McConnell's son John McConnell (d. 1825). This has the name M. McConnell in the Clan Donald database. Also there is the DNA from the descendant of Robert McConnell (d. 1805), son of Francis, labeled R.E. McConnell. The DNA from these two Francis McConnell descendants closely matches the DNA of John McConnell. So with this information it is now clear that Francis McConnell (d. 1769) was closely related to Robert McConnell and the two were probably brothers.
There is also a close match to a DNA sample labeled D.W. McConnell. D.W. McConnell is a descendant of McConnells who settled at an early date in Guernsey County, Ohio who are descendants of a William McConnell (d. 1840, Lee Twp, Carroll Co., OH). This family is documented in a book called "The McConnel and McConnell Familes" by Ralph E. Lawrence. The author traces this family back to Ireland, so the common ancestor was probably in Ireland.
There is one more closely matching DNA sample that could not be traced to anyone since no contact information was provided. If anyone knows how to contact the owner of the DNA labeled M.J. McConnell. It would be interesting to find out how that person's ancesgtry is related to the other McConnells that match this DNA.
There is also DNA information about descendants of Captain William McConnell (d. 1770) who lived in Franklin County, PA. This DNA is quite different from the DNA of the other McConnells in Franklin County, PA and it is of the hablogroup R1A. The sample for Captain William McConnell's descendant is labeled E. McConnell and it is similar to the DNA of descendants of Alexander McConnell (d. 1729). From this and other research, we have found that there were two genetically different McConnells in early Franklin County history. One group included Captain William McConnell was the brother of Alexander McConnell (d. 1792). These families probably have a link to Alexander McConnell (d. 1729). These brothers were not genetically related to the familes of Francis (d. 1769) and Robert McConnell (d. 1777).
In 1751 Robert McConnell was listed in the Lurgan County Township, Cumberland County, PA. In 1751 Lurgan Township, Cumberland
County would have included Fannett, Metal, Letterkenny and part of Southampton Townships, i.e. over the entire northern
third of present day Franklin County.
On March 4, 1755 he received 300 acres of land at the head branches of Back Creek bordered on the east by by James Kelly, bordered on the south by land owned by Samuell Mitchell, and on the west by land owned by Alexander Mathews and on the north by the North Mountain. The warrant was signed by James Kelly, William Mitchell, John Mathew and John Wead and James Fitzeman, Esq. of the land office.
4 Mar 1765, witness to the will of John McCamey, a tanner in Letterkenny Twp. Other witnesses were Alexander McConnell and Joseph Culbertson.
The will of Robert McConnell, of Letterkenny Twp, dated July 27, 1771 mentions his sons, Robert McConnell, James
McConnell, John McConnell, son-in-law Alexander McConnell, another son-in-law Robert McConnell (married Jane),
son-in-law James Sharp (Margaret Agnes' husband), and another daughter (Susannah) who is referred to as "widow Boyd."
The author of the book "North Mountain Shadows," believed that the wife of Caspar Laugle was a McConnell, but the exact relation is not known. Caspar Laugle owned land
that was originally owned by Robert McConnell, Sr. and which was between land owned by Robert McConnell, Jr. and Captain James McConnell.
Robert McConnell is buried at Rock Springs graveyard in Franklin Co... b. 1702, d. 1777. Rosannah died 1770 or 1790.
Near his grave is a Donald McConnell, who died July 29, 1776, age 75. This is possibly a brother of Robert McConnell.
