[13483] In the fall of 1775 Col. Robert Patterson and six; other young men, together with John McClelland and his family, came to the Royal Spring (now Georgetown) where they made a settlement that became
known as McClellands Fort or Station. Maj. (later General) George Rogers Clark made a prolonged stop at McClellands upon his first visit to Kentucky. He was there when the fort was attacked on December
29, 1776, by Mingo Indians under Pluggy. On this occasion the entire group from McClellands took refuge at Harrods Fort, but only after its militia had been crippled by the killing of John McClelland and
Charles White, and the serious wounding of Gen. Robert Todd and Capt. Edward Worthington.

It is possible that the John McClelland mentioned above was the father of our John McClelland. On November 8, 1792, Woodford Co., KY, 543 acres were surveyed in the name of Jonathan McClelland, Jr. This land was next to the Kentucky River. The family later reclaimed this land as described below in a case that went to the Kentucky Court of Appeals. That court case lists the eight children of John McClelland. Col Robert Patterson was one of the lawyers hired to bring the case to the court.
