Per Pat Thomas's family history:
"There is no record of Major James Porter having any military record and
it is believed that his title resulted from his serving on the Pennsylvania
State Militia on the staff of Governor Rittenhouse Porter, no relation but
a neighbor of James Porter, who is said to have been much impressed by his
good sense and intelligence. David Rittenhouse Porter moved to Huntingdon
County from Philadelphia and established a factory for the manufacture of
iron. He was Governor from 1838 to 1845. James Porter and his sons
assisted in building Governor Porter's brick house and John Porter learned
the trade of brick masonry in this operation-- a trade he subsequently
followed in Pittsburgh and Illinois."
