The Rocky Spring Church was one of the first Presbyterian Churches in Highland County (in 1809). This church building was perhaps second only to the Presbyterian Church of Clear Creek in Liberty Township.
When the Rocky Spring Church was organized it was named by John Wilson in memory of Rocky Spring in Pennsylvania. Historians say that probably the first gospel sermon ever preached in Madison Township was delivered here. The church was partially destroyed by a storm on March 18, 1876, and today no evidence of where it stood can be found.
Per a history of Highland County, the first elders of the church were George Watts, Samuel Strain, George Adair, Samuel McConnell and William Garrett.
The book (called the Sessions of Rocky Spring) begins with a list of those "in full communion with the church" on 22 Apr 1810. Among the names are:
William and Margaret Garrett
Samuel and Martha Strain
Ezekiel and Margaret McConnell
Samuel and Martha McConnell
It is interesting to note that in Dr. R.C. Galbraith's "History of Chillicothe Presbytery" (1889), page 114 reads: "Mr. Samuel Strain, one of the good men, who were elders in the Rocky Spring Church, was married four times and was the father of twenty-two children."
