The will below refers to a "John McConnell son of John McConnell, late of Hamilton Township." The first John McConnell referred to may have been John McConnell the son of Robert McConnell (d. 1801). The expression "late of Hamilton Township" could mean he had recently resided in Hamilton Township. John McConnell had not died by 1789 because his father, Robert McConnell (d. 1801) mentions his son John McConnell in his will written in 1799.
There was a Jonathan McConnell in the 1790 census, Franklin Co., PA, living next to Henry McFerrin, David Hineman, Joseph Sharpe, Adam Ross, Michael Summers. There were 2 Males over 16 and 1 female.
James Mitchell (d. 1797), named as a witness to the will below, was John McConnell's grandfather on his mother's side.
James McConnell (d. 1809), a lawyer, was an executor of the will. He was John McConnell's uncle.
The Gabby family were neighbors of the McConnells in Letterkenny Twp.
The second John McConnell may have been the son of John McConnell and the daughter of John Wade. The will gives him a portion of the estate of John Wade, probably because his mother had died and he was her only surviving child.
Per tombstone at Rocky Springs Church: John Wade was b 1710 abd d 17 Jan 1790.
Franklin County Will Book A, p 164.
Will of John Wead, Letterkenney Township,
written 18 Jul 1789, proven 25 Jan 1790.
Estate to be sold and proceeds to be divided among:
William Gabby son of John Gabby and nephew to my wife;
John McCannel, son of John McCannel, late of Hamilton Township;
wife Janet Wade (sic) and brother William Wade of near Beally Borrough,
County of Cavin, Ireland.
Exec: Wife Janet Wead and James McCannel of Letterkenney Township.
Wit: James Mitchell, Nathaniel Mitchell and Christian Grove.
In the 1800 census John may have been one of the two males listed in Robert McConnell's household
age 26-45. He may have moved back to his parent's house after his wife's death.
After 1800 it is unclear what became of John McConnell and his brother Joseph.
