[36152] A letter about John Chamberlin from Clyde A. Chamberlin:

Hello Robert:

Your letter and chart came a few minutes ago, so will drop a line,
disappointing though it will be. Common connection-- none that I know
of.

In fact, here's the background, as far as I can tell. Henry Chamberlin
came to America with his wife & numerous children. The family appear to
be "Quaker Sympathizers," and this got their son John into a little trouble.

John was not only a sympathizer, but also had a problem with his mouth;
he couldn't keep it shut. George Fox & Mary Dyer starting the Quaker move-
ment in America, much against "the wishes of the Crown." Remember now,
this was when they were still the "Crown Colonies" and did (more-or-less)
what England told them to do.

The "Crown" was going to hang Mary Dyer from the scaffolding, and John
was extremely "vocal" in the crowd gathering around. So he was tossed into
the pillory for 3 days; was urinated on, had garbage thrown at hime, etc.,
etc., and then released and told to appear in court.

John was either stupid or a hard learner. He appeared in Court alright;
but with his hat on, and proceeded to tell the Magistrate to go to hell.
Now that was two things he shouldn't have done! So he got 21 more days in
the stocks, and suffered greatly at the hands of some very tricky whip
handlers. We have the trial transcript, sentencing, etc. After 21 more
days (which almost killed him) he was "advised" to leave the territory for
his sake; so he moved to Rhode Island. He died there, but one of his sons
move to Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and that's where my branch comes from.

Several of John's brothers and sisters moved to, and through, New York.
We are related to them way back in the early 1700's; and are probably about
20th cousins 15 times removed, or something or other. It's rather ironic,
many of the Vermont-New York people spell it Chamerlain whereas almost
all of the New Jersey-Pennsylvania clan spells it Chamberlin. Why? I
have no idea.

Respectfully,
Clyde A. Chamberlin
