William "Tanner" McConnell came to Kentucky around the fall of 1780, at about the same time his uncle William McConnell was killed by Indians in a canoe. He may have come to Kentucky to help his uncle's family since he came at about the time of his death. He later appears to have put his uncle's property in his name. He may have been the head of family for the surviving children.
On Decembert 26, 1781 lots were issued to Lexington residents and William McConnell was included in the list. From a Lexington history-- Staples, pp 26; "William McConnell had a tan yard, the first in the new country, on Hunts Row (now Water Street)." Since there were several William McConnells in the area, William McConnell was known as William "Tanner" McConnell.
On June 4, 1780 William McConnell, Tanner's uncle had been issued a 1000 acre preemption and a 400 acre settlement in what would be Woodford County, Kentucky. This was probably changed on December 6, 1782 to be made out to William "Tanner" McConnell, who was referred to in the new warrant as William McConnell, Junior.
The land was located on the south side of the South Fork of Elkhorn Creek. Per Wikipedia, the South Fork of Elkhorn Creek became the dividing line between Scott County and Woodford County. The south side of this dividing line was Woodford County (Per Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elkhorn_Creek).
The Land Office Treasury Warrant #870, Patent # 2710 read as follows:
"To the Principal Surveyor of any County Within the Commonwealth of Virginia. This shall be your Warrant to Survey, and to lay off in one or more Surveys, for William McConnell, Junior, his Heirs or Assigns, the Quantity of One Thousand Acres of Land due unto the said William McConnell, Junior on preemption, as appeared on a certificate located in the Office of the from the Commissioners of Kentucky in consideration of the sum of Four Hundred Pounds Current Money paid into the Publick Treasury; the payment whereof to the Publick Treasury hath been duly certified by the Auditors of Publick Accounts, and the certificate received unto the Land Office. Given under my hand and the seal of this office, on the twenty fourth day of June in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty."
The Survey:
Surveyed for William McConnell, Junior, One Thousand Acres of Land by virtue of an Entry made December the 6th 1782, on a preemption warrant number 870 on the South Side of the South Fork of the Elkhorn on the trace made by Crittenden and from their Camp to Licking and adjoining a military survey by Edmund Taylor. (Detailed description of the survey followed.)
Surveyed June 2, 1784.* The chain carriers for the survey were Joseph Shane and Joseph Mitchell and Will McConnell was the marker for the survey. The surveyor was Christopher Greenup and the survey was certified by Thomas Marshall.
On a separate page where there are surveyor notes about dates of record, etc., and there is a reference to "Capn" William McConnell, which helps identity this William McConnell.
The survey itself says July 2, 1784, but it is lightly crossed out and in the formal report it says the survey was done on June 2, 1784.
Around 1790, Tanner's brother James McConnell joined him in Woodford County, Kentucky. William's first wife had died about that time and both brothers married sisters named Stevenson. James McConnell purchased among the first lots sold in Cincinnati (first called Losantiville) in 1789. But he later returned to Woodford County after spending some time in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Then he finally moved to Greene County, Ohio in 1811.
April 17, 1793. William Wood and Sarah his wife of Mason Co., KY and John Corwine of Mason Co., KY, sold 149 acres of land for 59 pounds and 12 shillings to William McConnell, George Ramsey, Samuel Black being by the Foreman land. Witnesses: Abner Howell, Joseph Staton, Christopher Wood. The clerk was Thomas Marshall, Jr.
I found this reference from the book in one of my early family history stories:
"Reference s have been made of Capt. William McConnell who built the first grist mill in the area of Pike County, Missouri. According to early Early Missouri Land Claims book, William and John Mcconnell held land claims in St. Charles County, later Pike County, in about 1799. This was originally the Louisiana Territory. These were claims of original settlement under the Spanish and French. before the Louisiana Purchase. William McConnell held 800 arpens (acres)of land and John McConnell held 640 arpens. Another reference in the same book said that John McConnell was about seventeen years old when he helped a neighbor set his claim in 1799."
The McConnells held earlier claims under the French, before the Louisiana Purchase, which would account for the reference of settlement abt 1808, under the American land claims.
First Settlers [in Pike Co., MO]
The first families from North and South Carolina were the Watson brothers -- John, James, David and Samuel; Jordon brothers -- John, James and Robert; Alexander Allison; William McConnell; Thomas Cunningham; John Turner; John Walker and Abraham Thomas. All these came in 1808.
