David was the eldest living son of the family, and like many of the pioneers of Ohio had seen much hardship and privation in early life. He was born and raised on the frontier and early became a hunter, a scout, and Indian fighter. On the 8th day of June 1790, a small party of Shawnee Indians fired upon the family home in open daylight." pg 103
(William, the youngest son of David Jolly, Sr, was taken by the Shawnee Indians and kept for several years)
About this time David Jolly, Jr, married Miss Mary Cavin and awaited a reasonable prospect of peace with the Indians to remove to some of the rich lands in the Northwestern Territory to begin life in earnest. He occasionally followed boating on the Ohio and had been engaged in furnishing supplies for Wayne's Army at Cincinnati. pg 104
Near the middle of March, 1797, David Jolly, Jr, set out on horseback to hunt his brother William and bring him back home. pg 104
The first place of preaching was at a cabin-built school on the land of Samuel Evans. The Rev Dobbins officiated at the organization of the Presbyterian congregation. At this organization, there were two elders elected, to wit: David Jolly and William Keys. The church at this time consisted of five members only, three of whom were women". pg 132

"Early in June, 1805, David Jolly and James Jolly, with their families, moved from the vicinity of Chillicothe and settled on the Rocky fork east of the present town of Hillsboro. With them came their brother, William, and brother-in-law and sister, William and Mary Ann Warnick. William Warnick died the following fall. The Jollys were among the first settlers of Chillicothe, having emigrated to that neighborhood in the fall of 1796, from Virginia.
David, the eldest living son of the family, was born and raised on the frontier and early became a hunter, a scout, and Indian fighter. His romantic story has already been told in this volume. The companion of the Wetzels, the Bradys and the Zanes in border warfare, he was also the companion of McArthur and David McDonald, Massie and other early survivors and spies of southern Ohio. He continued to reside only a few years in Ohio, preferring the wilder scenes of the west. He, however, married and raised a most respectable family, whose descendants are living in Wisconsin. James Jolly was a tanner, worked at his trade on a farm in Marshall Township, afterward owned by Judge Delaplane, but now in possession of Judge Huggins.
David Jolly, Jr, was a successful farmer and leading member in the Presbyterian Church, being one of the first to establish a congregation of that denomination, and erected a church in the neighborhood of Hillsboro. He was an earnest and pure-hearted Christian man, helping with a kindly hand the poor and professed, and in every way showing that the religion that he professed was not a mere emotion, but a deep seated principle ruling his life. He died at his home in this county in 1843".

Beardstown is one of Illinois' older towns, first settled in 1819. The City's founder, Thomas Beard, was from Ohio, and with his friend General Murray McConnel of Edwardsville, arrived at an Indian Mound Village in 1819, located just below Mascouten Bay. French explorers had named the site "Beautiful Mound Village" because the Indian camp was at the base of large Indian burial mounds. Beard erected a log cabin at the river's edge and began trading with the Indians.
The first election that was held within the boundaries of Morgan county, took place at Swingington's Point, in the year 1823. The election was held at the house of Jimmy Swingington, at the point of timber about two miles northeast of Lynnville, and one of the contestants for the office of sheriff, Alexander Wells, is still living in Scott County. Political excitement ran high in the vicinity of the old log cabin, and, along in the afternoon, resulted in a good old backwoods fist-and-skull fight.
The first court was held at Stephen M. Umpstead's cabin, on Allison's Mound. John Reynolds, afterwards governor of Illinois, was judge. This was in the year 1824. The county of Morgan was created the year before, but no court, other than that of justices of the peace, had been held. Among the attorneys who appeared before the jury, under an oak tree, near the cabin of Umpstead, were Murray McConnell and William Gordon. McConnell arrived in the year 1823. James Scott told me that he heard him in his first case. It was tried before Seymour Kellog, a justice of the peace, who resided on the Mauvaisterre. William Gordon was the attorney who conducted the other side of the case.
