I am trying to establish the parents of my great-grandfather Isaac McConnell, born March 1826 in Brandywine, Wilmington, New Castle, DE. Military records show that he enlisted in the Army in 1847 in Trenton, NJ. After the Mexican War he worked in Philadelphia as a hatter for a few months; then in 1849 re-enlisting in the Army in New York, NY and was sent to Texas, where he remained the rest of his life.
The 1840 Census list an Isaac McConnell with a 15-20 year old son, which may be my Isaac.
A Mexican War pension document state that my Isaac had a stepmother.
There are only a limited number of McConnells enumerated Wilmington between 1800 and 1850. Probably they are related and arrived in Delaware in the late 1700s
DNA shows that I am closely related to several McConnells that came to Pennsylvania in the early 1700s and migrated westward. I doubt that several families would have reverse migrated to Delaware in the late 1700s.
Any information, leads, recommendations/guidance is appreciated.
The 1880 census show he was born in Delaware in 1815 (way off based on other information) and both parents were from Delaware.
There was an 1880 agricultural census. This showed he owed 4 acres of tillable land, 25 acres of pasture land, 1 horse and $25 worth of cattle.
