JAMES CLARK DIED JAN. 15
JAMES E. CLARK, 88, who homesteaded on Square Butte bench in 1909, died
Tuesday, January 15, 1974 at Phoenix, Arizona, his home since 1956.
!Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00PM, in the Community
United Methodist Church at Geraldine, with Rev. Dwight Harshman officiating.
Burial was in Geraldine cemetery with military honors at the graveside.
Pallbearers were Clifford Scribner, Roscoe Peet, WW Barry, Clyde Corley, Henry
Ludtke and John Adson. Honorary pallbearers were John Buchanan, John
Applegate, Frank Fairbanks, Glen Robison, Nick Fontana, Zoyd Money, Waldo
Painter and Jack Protsman.
!Mr. Clark, was born at Oconee, Illinois, September 12, 1885, son of George and
Sarah (Chamberlain) Clark. He came to Montana in 1909, homesteading near
Square Butte. He was married to Florence Stip at Helena October 22, 1927.
Mrs. Clark died in 1949.
!He operated the farm at Square Butte until 1956, when he retired from that
occupation and moved to Arizona. He operated a tourist court in Phoenix as
well as other property until complete retirement a few years ago.
!He served with the army in France during WWI.
!Survivors are a son, Gordon Clark, of Geraldine, and two sisters, Mrs. Alida
Little of Geraldine and Mrs. Georgie Brandenberg in California, and four
grandchildren.
!MILITARY SERVICE:
James, served in the US Army in WWI, in France June 1917 to June 1919. He held
the rank of Corporal, and was entitled to wear three gold chevron stripes.
!Jim volunteered for the Service, WWI, enlisting at Helena. He was sent with a
squad to guard a railroad bridge on the Flathead Reservation. He remained there
only four months before being shipped from Camp Mills, overseas on the Ship
Leviathon. He spent Christmas on the ship on the Irish Seas before arriving in
England. He stayed at Winchester, England a few days before being sent across
the channel to LeHavre. He attended officers training school for fourteen
months, then was sent to duty at another training school at Bourne for about
four months.
!Mr. Clark sailed from Marseilles on the Carsenta, an Italian ship, back to
Camp Mills where he received his honorabledischarge. He returned to his home
in Montana, in August of 1919.
!Jim went back to farming, alone and had very poor crop yields because of the
drought but he managed to add to his acreage of cultivated land during the next
few years, until 1925 after which time he showed a good profit. Then in 1928
and 1929 his winter wheat averaged 40 bu. per acre. He dispensed with his
small house and put up a house with comfort and conveniences, added farm
improvements that raised the standard of living in the area. He had farmed
with horses in the early years but had completely changed over to power
operated machinery.
! elegy on the country school teacher
Written by J E Clark on 20 October 1903
I sit by the open window
At the closing of the day
And think of our discarded teacher
That was known by the name of Clay
!Who on account of the ribs he had broken
And the necks he had thrown out of place
Was forced to resign his position
And hastily left the place
!They say he was harsh to his pupils
But he was always kind to me
And why they didn't like him
Is what I cannot see
!But now we have another
Who is apparently just as good
And I hope he'll give satisfaction
To the entire neighborhood
!RETIRED FROM THE FARM:
When Jim was about 71 years of age, he retired from the farm, and moved to
Arizona where he owned and operated a Motor Court for several years. He did a
lot of painting and was considered to be quite talented in the field of Art.
He liked to paint Scenery pictures as well as various other subjects.
