William served in the Revolutionary War and was afterwards know as Major Davidson. After the close of the war, William and Margaret sold the land on the Catawba to David Rankin and moved with their family to Buncombe County, where he and his brother James Davidson acquired 640 acres of land covering what is now Asheville, North Carolina. The family home was located on Bee Tree Creek Road near the village of Swannoa. Her both William and Margaret were buried, but the marker later installed by the DAR was moved to Swannoa Presbyterian Church.
The William Davidson family was among the early settlers of the French Broad Valley and played an important part in the organization of Buncombe County, from which William served as state senator, and in the House of Commons.
