But the placement makes me believe his father may have been a brother or other relative of John McConnells. In John McConnell's estate papers, James McConnell's name appears many times from transactions between them. But he is not mentioned as a son in the will. George W. McConnell named his first son James A. McConnell, possibly in remembrance of this James McConnell. Both John and James named their first son George W. McConnell. In the 1880 census, James McConnell has his father born in Ireland and his mother in Pennsylvania.

In the 1860 census, the family is indexed as "McCarwell"

The 1880 census indicates that his father was from Ireland.
