INDEX

[5826] She and her husband, David Jolly, Sr, were among the earliest settlers in the neighborhood of Wheeling, West Virginia.

"David Jolly had gone that day on a journey to the Monongahela to collect payment for some property he had sold before he moved to his present residence. His daughter, Mary, was absent on a visit to her uncle, Joseph Mc Cune, some five miles distant.

Mrs Jolly, that is Elizabeth, was standing in the door waiting for son, James, to come with the bucket of water, and when the Indians, not doubting but all the family had arrived to dinner, fired from their well chosen ambush into the house. Mrs Jolly fell dead instantly. John was shot and very badly wounded. James had heard the alarm and hurridly made his escape. The Indians took William, the youngest son, and his cousin Joseph McCune, Jr, prisoners, then pillaged and fired the house and made a rapid retreat". pg 103
