On August 18, 1862 James Lockwood enlisted for the Civil War. He was a private in Company F, Illinois Infantry Unit 115. He joined in Shelby County, IL and enlisted for three years. He re-enlisted on April 9, 1864 in Blue Springs, TN. He mustered out at Camp Harker, TN on June 11, 1865.
In 1880, James Lockwood lived next door to his father, John Lockwood.
In 1885 the entire family had moved to Logan Twp, Butler County, Kansas.
