Per David Chamberlin:
William Chamberlin was mentioned as owing to the estate of Martin Stebbins
in 1659 (Suffolk County Probate, NEHGS Register, 1878). The names of both
his wives remain unknown. Many genealogists erroneously give Sarah Jones
as one of his wives when in fact she was the wife of his brother Henry.
The division of his son Freedom's estate in 1685 identify which children
were born by his first wife and those born by his second wife.
He was a Quaker and settled at Hull about 1655 and in 1657 was granted 11
parcels of land by the Proprietors. These grants included 2 acres in the
village, lots a Peddock's Island, Hogge Island, Strawberry Hill, White Head,
Sagamore Hill, meadow at Lincoln's Rocks, Huett's Point, etc. He was a
Selectman at Hull in 1658 and in 1662, appraised the estate of Thomas
Loring.
William Chamberlin was also mentioned in a deed given by Thomas Chaffey, of
Hull, Grantor, and Thomas Loring, Senior, Grantee, regarding property in
Hull. Viz. "For a valuable consideration, four acres of land in Hull,
John Loring, southeast, William Chamberlin, northwest; the town street
southwest; Duck Lane northeast; meadow by Streights' River-- two lots at
Sagamore Hill-- two lots at Strawberry Hill, except a cows' common formerly
sold to William Chamberlain... etc." Signed and sealed 30 May 1660.
[Suffolk Deeds, Liber III, P. 373-374]. (See also Suffolk Deeds, Liber V,
P. 42; Liber VI, P. 289-290; Liber XIII, P. 311-312.)
William Chamberlin died of smallpox 22 Nov 1678, a short time before
his brother Henry died of the same malady.
William Chamberlin, his brother Henry and mother Jane, were named as
Executors of his father's will in 1673. In 1675, they sold his father's
property in Hingham to Thomas Sawyer (Suffolk Deeds, Liber XIII, P. 479-
482). Although he himself died intestate, a record of the property
settlement appears in the Suffolk county Deeds, Liber XII, P. 35-36.
This text of this record reads as follows:
CHAMBERLIN, JOHN, of Hull, Mass., Cordwainer, 1679. Administrator.
CHAMBERLIN, JOB, of Scituate, Mass., Shipwright, 1679. Administrator.
CHAMBERLIN, WILLIAM, SR., of Hull, Mass., 1679, Deceased.
CHAMBERLIN, WILLIAM, JR., of Hull, Mass., Weaver, 1679. Son and Heir.
Indenture between John Chamberlyne, Cordwainer, of Hull, in the Colony
of Massachusetts, in New England, and Job Chamberlyne, Shipwright, of
Scituate, in the Colony of New Plymouth, in New England, Administrators
of the estate of their father William Chamberlyn of Hull deceased, on the
one part: and William Chamberlyn, Weaver, of Hull, eldest son and
rightful heir of the said William Chamberlyn, deceased, on the other
part.
Witnesseth that whereas the said William Chamberlyn died intestate and
the Honorably County Court held at boston on 14 January 1678, granted
power of Administrators upon the said estate of the said William
Chamberlyne unto John Chamberlyne and Job Chamberlyn. Further, that
the said court held on 28 January 1678, ordered that the estate of the
said William Chamberlyn, deceased, amounting by inventory to Five Hundred
Twenty Nine Pounds be thus proportioned (after the payment of debts) viz:
Unto the eldest son, 100 Pounds, he defaulting thereout the value of the
land his father gave him before his death, and the other Eight children,
50 pounds apiece, and so in proportion amongst the children as an estate
shall remain or be coming; to be paid unto them as they come of age;
and in the mean time to be improved by the Adminstrators for the younger
children's education.
Further, that the said Administrators desiring to be freed from the trouble
and charge of the younger children's estate, have made this agreement with
their brother William Chamberlyn, in the manner following:
Imprimis. The said John Chamberlyn and Job Chamberlyn agree that William
Chamberlyn, his heirs and assigns, shall forever have used of, hold,
possess and enjoy, the new house at Hull, and the old barn, with half the
land belonging to both houses containing about one acre, more or less
(John's place only excepted), which comes with Six feet of the new house
and 12 feet of the barn and also all the East or Northeast end of the
home lot: which runs from the greatest rock of the lower side of the lot
and so ranging cross the lot to a little rock which is a little within
Thomas Loring's lot and lyeth about South Southeast from the great rock
and so all the lot Eastward, bounded with the said Thomas Loring's lot
on the South, and by the highway on the North.
Also three-quarter parts of the lot which lyeth at the Easterly end of
Peddock's Island; and the lot at Sheep Island and the lot at Hogg Island,
and all wood lots upon the Neck and all the lots upon Brewster's Island,
etc.
And also all that meadow at Green Hill which was bought of Joseph Bates
of Hingham, and two Cow commons and the lot at Whitehead.
He the said William Chamberlyn paying unto his brothers Nathaniel and
Benjamin and to his sister Mary, the sum of 50 pounds apiece.
He the said William Chamberlyn covenants with the said John and Job
Chamberlyn to pay and deliver unto the said Nathaniel, his portion when
he shall attain the age of 21 years. And also, in consideration of the
sum of 15 pounds and the use of Mary's portion until she attains the age
18 years years or marriage, the said William agrees to bring her up and
supply here with all necessaries until she attains the age of 14 years.
It shall be mutually agreed, that in the case the said Mary shall choose
to live with William until 18 years old or when married, that William
shall have the sum of 5 pounts and use of her portion in full satisfaction
for her maintenance and education until that time. If Mary chooses to
live in Hull, and to build a house there, then she shall have half an
acre in the middle piece of the home lot for five pounds of her portion.
For the sum of 20 pounds and use of Benjamin's portion until he attains
the age of 21 years of age, William shall provide for the said Benjamin's
maintenance and education until he reaches the age of 14 years. In the
event that Benjamin shall dwell with William until the age of 21 years,
then William shall pay Benjamin his full portion ordered by the court
without any interest and that he shall have as part of his portion one
Cow's common, one acre of meadow at Green Hill which was formerly Joseph
Bates' and one acre of land in the home lot in the middle piece, and
one-quarter part of that lot at the Easterly end of Peddock's Island,
according as the several parcels of land were apprized.
The said William also agrees to teach or have the children to be taught
to read and write. And in case that the said Benjamin and Mary or either
of them shall die before they come of age to receive their portions, then
the said William, or his heirs and assigns, shall have so much out of the
deceased party's estate for their bringing up and education until that
time as shall be judged meet by two indifferent persons and the remainder
to be equally divided between the surviving children of the said William
Chamberlyn, deceased.
And the said John and Job Chamberln, themselves, do covenant to pay unto
their brothers Joseph and Freedom Chamberlyn and their sister Sarah
Chamberlyn, their several respective portions according to the court order.
And whatever else shall appear to be their father's estate and not
inventoried at this time shall be equally divided between all the said
children, with William to have a double portion. Signed, sealed and
delivered by William Chamberlyn, John Chamberlyn, and Job Chamberlyn,
on 29 April 1679. Approved the court on 12 Nov 1680. Entered and
recorded on 25 March 1681, by Isaac Addington, Clerk. [Suffolk Deeds,
Liber XII, P. 35-36.]
