4. NICHOLAS2 COONCE (NICHOLAS1) was born 1759, and died 1820 in
St. Charles County, Missouri. He married REBECCA MCCONNELL 1799 in
St. Charles, Missouri Barrameo Church, daughter of WILLIAM MCCONNELL
and SARAH JANUARY. She was born Aft. 1777 in Pennsylvania, and died
1839 in St. Charles County, Missouri.
More About NICHOLAS COONCE:
Early Settler: 1791, in Spanish census of St. Charles
Indian fight: 1778, Wm. Biggs recorded that he saw Nicholas Coonce, a prisoner
for 2 years, in a Kickapoo Indian village on the Wabash River. This matches
oral history that Nicholas was captured, held and escaped, but was scalped and
left for dead. He hated Indians.
Military service: Bet. 1808 - 1814, Served in St. Charles Co. Militia Dragoons
under Capt. (later Col.) Mackey Wherry which escorted Gen. Wm. Clark to Ft.
Osage for Indian Treaty, later in War of 1812.
Occupation: 1797, Partner in salt business on Auhaha River (Salt River) with
John B. Cook and Maturin Beauvet, had horse mill at St.Charles in 1797, and
Coonce Ft., a tavern and waystation near Cottleville, MO. until death.
Oral history: Bef. 1965, James E. Coonce told story of an ancestor being
captured by indians who escaped, was run down, scalped and left for dead, but
survived to be an indian fighter. This was in Bigg's accounts and other family
members.
