In the town of Eastham, in the very southern part, there is a short road
called Rogers Lane that goes from the main highway 6 southeast to a bay.
Nearby in the bay is an island called Hopkins Island. Both of these are
near the Old Cove Burying Grounds, which is to the left of Highway 6 just as
you enter Eastham from the south. These areas are probably where the Hopkins
and Rogers families lived. In the Old Cove Burying Grounds are monuments to
Joseph Rogers and Constance Hopkins (pictures attached).
From the Cape Cod Journal (www.capecodusa.com/history) on the Internet
regarding the history of Eastham:
Eastham is one of the four original town on Cape Cod. It was formed in 1640
when Governor Bradford defined the area in the patent he received from the
Earl of Warwick in 1630 as "Nawsett." Nawsett was to be reserved for
"Purchasers" and "Old Comers" (those who had come over in the first three
boats, the Mayflower, the Fortune and the Anne). As Plimoth was getting to be
too crowded and the land worn out, in 1643 a committee was sent to Nawsett to
investigate the possibility of moving the whole Colony to the new wide open
spaces. They agreed that Nawsett could not support the entire Colony but they
bought large tracts of it from the Indians and many younger colonists moved.
In 1651 it was named Eastham. Gradually parts of the original Eastham broke
off and became Provincetown, Truro, Chatham, and Wellfleet.
