In the History of St. Charles Co., MO Nicholas Coontz is shown as having one of the earliest grants, #58, for 340 acres of land. This is another for 640 listed under Coontz with no first name.
Nicholas Coonce married REBECCA MCCONNELL, and settled on the Booneslick Road in St. Charles Co., where he was killed by a fall from a horse. He hunted a great deal, and was not afraid of anything. It is said that he used to crawl into hollow trees and dens, where bears were hid, and feel of them to see if they were fat enough to kill.
