Thomas McConnell was born near Belfast, Ireland in 1837. He came to America in 1852. He and his older brother, Edward, lived together and cooked their own meals. They saved their money and sent for their younger sister, Sarah, so that she could keep house for them. They lived near Pittsburgh. Sarah married in 1857 and moved out. When edward married in 1860, Thomas continued to live with his brother's family. They both worked on the river during the winter and in the vegatable gardens during the summer. Both men were much like their father in stature, perhaps a little taller, but they had the same ruddy complexion, hair a little
sandy in their youth and bald by middle age. Ernest and Mason McConnell are most like their grandfather and his brother in size and body
conformation.
Thomas was best man at his brother's second wedding. The bride's older sister was maid of honor. During the following year, a romance ensued and
Thomas and Martha Jane McCausland were married on christmas Day in 1869. She was born in 1835, the daughter of James and Mary (Hunter) McCausland.
Thomas farmed all of his life, first near Mechanicstown, then in East Township, Carroll county, Ohio from 1875 until his death. This is the same farm his son Thomas farmed all of his life. He grew berries, vegetables and potatoes. He peddled his produce in Salainsville, Wellsville and nearby Ohio River towns. He often took his children along on these sumer and fall wagon trips.
Thomas McConnell was quite interested in politics. He served for some time as Carroll County Republician Centeral Committeman. While plowing in
April 1905 he injured his foot. His wife had been sick in bed for many weeks. When blood poisoning set in , Thomas was put into another bed in the same room as his wife so that their children could look after both of them. For several days they wondered which would go first. Thomas died May 16, 1905, while Martha Jane lived about a month longer.
