Thomas J., the youngest child, grew to manhood in Ohio, and married, in Montgomery County Ohio. After marriage, in 1826, Montgomery Co., OH, Thomas McCONNELL and wife began life on a farm and there all of their children were born.

Per the 1840 census, Thomas J and his oldest son, Alexander, were employed in agriculture.
In October and November 1846 he purchased 180 acres of government land in Auglaize Co., OH, probably as an investment to resell.
In 1855 all of the family except Alexander, who still lives on a farm in Montgomery County, came to Wisconsin. The trip was made overland, and they settled at Madison, when the city was a town of about 3,000 inhabitants. It was here that Thomas began to buy land, continuing buying and selling for some years, until at last he retired from active business. He died at Madison [Dane County, Wisconsin], 23 January 1893, in his ninetieth year; his wife, in her eighty-sixth year, survives him. Both of them were for many years stanch members of the Presbyterian Church.
Per 1880 census, he was living in the 1st Ward, Madison, Dane Co., WI. The entry is on page 90D. It says his profession was fishing and hunting and his father was born in Scotland and his mother in PA.
