John ENDECOTE

[36361]

ABT 1490 - ____

Family 1 : Unknown _____
  1. +Henry ENDECOTT
  2.  John ENDECOTT

INDEX

[36361] The following note (and much information) from Carole Patton, P.O. Box 305,
Buffalo Creek, CO., 30425. (303) 838-8830.

Endicott Family
( ? 1327-1667)
"The first person bearing this name that is noted in English records is
JOHANNES de YNNDECOTE, who was taxed in 1327 for lands held in South Tawton
parish of Devonshire. The estate itself is mentioned in a charter of 1262,
as the "estate of Yondecote" as part of a large manor in South Tawton.
The name itself is derived from "yonder-cote" or "further homestead."
Cote is an old Saxon term for homestead."

"South Tawton parish is less than ten miles from Chagford, England, the
home of the Endicotts determined to be in the family line. The only
Endicotts known in early English history are all listed in this small
geographic area. Several are named, however, the first one confirmed as
part of our line is John Endecote, born about 1490. The name became
ENDICOTT with about the first generation born in America."

First Generation
"John Endecote may have been born in an Endicott family of Winkleigh
parish, near South Tawton, however, this isn't confirmed. He purchased
an estate called "Myddell Park" in Chagford parish about 1528, with this
parish remaining the family seat until the immigration of our American
ancestor. Myddell Parke is described as containing a "tynne-worke" in
early accounts. Tin mining properties, as attested in family wills, were
the basis of family wealth for several generations."

1 M 10-14 (John).
1 F 20-29 (Cynthia), 2 F 0-4 (Phoebe Jane, unknown).
Note: John would have been 30-99. He may have been sick or away from the house for the census and the 10-14 year old is someon else. Or this is just a mistake and he was categorized as 10-14 instead of 30-39.
Another possibility is he had recently died but they still registered his household under his name for the census.
