... PEOPLE
... all Heard Of Deacon Goff, of Fremont,
One of the Most Faithful Followers of Jesus in our City.

Well, perhaps you have not all heard of Deacon Harlow Goff, that is
the new settlers, but the old settlers all know him, especially for his
sterling Christian qualities. He has lived on a farm at the head of
Broad Street for over twenty years. The neatness of his place and the
home comforts around it always indicated him as a man of faithful
character. His wood pile was uniformly piled, his yard was in order,
around his door was neat and his hedge and fences always presented a
home-like appearance, as well as one that would mark him as a man that
loved his home and his family. This man and his good wife are the
subject ... of today. This aged couple have ... along together in
this world ... years, and without even a...-king their course in life.
What ... back upon. For the past... years these kind fellow citizens
... have appeared to age the least, but... the road they have set for
themselves. Only a few months since Mr. and Mrs. Goff took a trip to
Lincoln or thereabouts and it was the first trip the had taken for
several years on the cars. They enjoyed their visit, but wished to
return as soon, almost, as they had seen their friends, who had
prepared a hearty welcome for them.

Harlow Goff was born January 2d, 1814 in the town of Augusta,
Oneida County, New York, where his parents had emmigrated from
Connecticut.

Mary A. Knox was born in the same town April 7th, 1818. In 1832
her parents moved to a farm near the village of Knoxboro, then known
as Knox corner, where they continued to live together until they had
passed more than sixty-three years of married life. Harlow Goff
and Mary A. Knox were married Jan. 19th, 1843, (being 47 years ago
next Sunday.) They had six children, of which four are now living,
viz: H.K. Goff, of Fremont, Mrs. Myra M. Brown, of Maple Creek,
... W. Goff and Hiram H. Goff of Maple Creek. One child died in
infancy and one at eighteen years of age, of typhoid fever, in the
fall of 1865. After the death of Charles H. Goff the whole family
had a run of typhoid fever, and Christmas, 1865, found the whole
family unable to leave their beds, but kind friends and neighbors
watched over them and all the others survived. On the following
spring, on account of the poor health of the family, the farm was
sold and they moved to the Village of Augusta Center, where they
lived until November, 1868, when they moved to their present home.
They were both born of Christian parents and early led to accept
of Christ as their Savior and to be his humble and earnest
followers has been their chief aim in life. When they arrived
in the far west, as Nebraska was then called, they connected
themselves with the Congregational society, and Mr. Goff was one
of its first deacons, and has ever been a pillar in that church,
and like Father Heaton, it has to be a terrible cold day when
Deacon Goff and wife are not found in their pew in that church.

In the 1870 census taken on July 23rd 1870, in Fremont, Dodge Co.,
Nebraska, Harlow Goff and his family appear as follows:

Harlow Goff 56 Male Farmer Property value $6,000, estate value
$1,500, born New York
Mary A. Goff 57 born New York
Henry Goff 26 Male Farmer Property value $9,000, estate value
$1,000, born New York
Myra Goff 20 Female At Home, born New York
Herbert Goff 17, Male Attending school, born New York
Hyram Goff, 14, Male Attending school, born New York

The combined property value and estate values made Harlow and Henry
Goff among the wealthiest, if not the wealthiest, men in Fremont.

Harlow Goff provided the land for the Ridge Cemetery in Fremont where
over 50 Brown and Goff relatives are buried.

[28185] Found Jackson McConnell, a carpenter, in a Shasta County California register dated 1898, age 69, b. PA.

He was listed in Nevada City, CA as a carpenter in 1895.

The 1880 census looked like Tennessee but possibly it was just bad handwriting and Penn was meant instead of Tenn.

The 1870 census said he was born in PA and the 1860 census said Virginia.

So based on the majority of census records above, it looks to me like Jackson McConnell may have been born in PA, which implies John McConnell of Tyler County, VA, probably married and lived for a while in Pennsylvania before moving the Virginia. I havent found many marriages on line for Greene Co., PA.
