1840 Census, Tyler County, Virginia.
1 M 30-40 (John), 1 M 5-10 (Jackson), 3 M 0-5 (Andrew, Smith, George). 1 F 30-40 (Pheby), 1 F 0-5 (Phylena).
Manning McConnell, b. 1 Mar 1843 was probably named for Manning Martin who lived close to the family in the 1840 census.
In 1840 there was a person called Manning Martin living near John McConnell's family. There is one child named Manning McConnell and another named Martin McConnell. So I think Manning Martin was related somehow. I found this reference concerning Manning Martins wife:
http://www.lindapages.com/marshall/djones.txt
9. MARY JANE5 LONG (JANE4 JONES, MORGAN3, MORGAN2, DAVID1) was born October 02, 1812 in Greene County, PA, and died February 26, 1890 in Tyler Co., Virginia (WV). She married MANNING D. MARTIN, son of JOHN MARTIN and MILLICENT MANNING
I found another curious naming coincidence when I followed Emeline McConnell to the 1860 census. On the same page as Emeline in Saline Twp, Miller Co., MO, there is a man named Smith Manning. The third McConnell child is called Smith and one of the last ones was called Manning. I tried following Smith Manning but it didnt seem to lead me to any conclusions. He came from Tennessee where he married in 1832 and he was born in North Carolina. He came to Missouri in 1836.
I found four of the children in the 1850 census: Emeline, Manning, Andrew, and Martin. Emeline, Manning and Andrew were shown as being from Virginia and Martin was shown as being born in Indiana. In the 1870 census Martin McConnell is listed as being born in Virginia.
I am attaching a file about William McConnell, the other family in the 1840 census.
Possible brother of Pheby: Smith Manning, who married Frances Lazenberry in Williamson Co., TN.

About John Buck, next door neighbor to John McConnell in 1840
Williamson Island is a bar island on the Ohio River in Tyler County, West Virginia. It lies to the southwest of Paden City with Witten Towhead (once part of Williamson Island) directly downstream. Along with Witten Towhead, Williamson Island is a part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge. In 1817, John Buck settled in Tyler County and executed a lease on Williamson Island. This is the first recorded entry of the Buck surname in Tyler County. The mountain to its east, Buck Knob, takes its name from the island's Buck family.
Here is a query found at a genealogy forum:
I am looking for any information regarding John McConnell of Virginia. He was born on Feb. 7, 1804. He married a woman named Pheby (not sure on last name) who was born Jan. 20, 1808. They were the parents of Jackson, Andrew, Smith, George, Phylina, Martin, Emaline, Manning, and Silas McConnell.
Thanks,
Amanda
Hi Amanda,
Was looking at an old posting that you did back in 2001. Did you ever find any information on John McConnell and his family? I have just started my search for this family. I have information on Martin McConnell, Martin's son Robert Franklin McConnell and Robert's family, his two sons and daughter and their families. Let me know if I can be of any help. I have pictures I can share with you if you interested. If you have any information on John that you are willing to share I can use your input.
Thanks,
Paula
