Alexander McConnell grew up in Peters Twp, Cumberland (later Franklin) County, Pennsylvania. His father died in 1770 when he was only 12 and after reaching maturity he inherited his father's lands as the oldest male in the family according to the rules of primogeniture of the time. His cousin, Robert Patterson, was an early companion who later became a famous explorer-- the founder of both Lexington, KY and Cincinnati, OH. Robert Patterson's mother, Jane McConnell, was his father's sister. They often traveled together and they were so close they were often regarded as being like brothers.
In 1776, when Alexander McConnell was about 18 years old, he traveled to Kentucky. Soon after he arrived he was involved in a small battle with hostile Indians at McClelland's Station. In 1778 he joined George Rogers Clark's Illinois Expedition. The objective of this expedition was to capture English forts in Illinois to eliminate the ability of the English to fight with the Indians in the area. This expedition was a success since the forts were captured and the British commander of the area, Henry Hamilton, was captured. On January 5, 1780 he signed what was called the Citizen's Compact of Lexington. This compact was an agreement that specified that each person who had raised a crop of corn the previous year was entitled to two lots-- one in Lexington and a larger one outside of Lexington. Alexander fought at the Battle of Blue Licks in 1782 and participated in expeditions against the Shawnee Indians. On an expedition in 1782 commanded by Colonel Robert Patterson, he visited the Dayton, Ohio area for the first time. Several years later he returned to this area as a pioneer.
Jan 21, 1793, John Crittenden's deed of 227 acres bordered Alexander McConnell's 400 acre preemption on the South Fork of the Elkhorn River in Woodford County, Kentucky.
In 1796 Alexander McConnell purchased land in Lemon Twp, Butler Co., Ohio. Note: from the U.S.Genweb Project found at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohbutler/cyc/623.htm
He settled near Franklin, Ohio in 1804. In 1806 Alexander and Rebecca McConnell came to Dayton, Ohio and entered a section of land lying just east of the National Soldiers' Home, which they cleared. They had five children, all but two of whom moved farther west.
Alexander was listed in Ohio tax records for 1809, 1810 and 1812. He must have started to accumulate land since there are three listings in the 1816 tax list. He was in the 1820 census, Dayton Twp., Montgomery Co., OH, p. 130. In the 1820 Census, Alexander was indexed as "Alexander McConnah". It says the census was in Miami Co., OH, but Dayton is the capital of Montgomery Co., OH. Boundaries and place names were changing frequently at the time. All the family were engaged in commerce (land transactions). One member of the family was an unnaturalized foreigner which was probably Rebecca Thompson, born in England.
1820 Census, Dayton Twp, Miami Co., OH.

1 F 45+ (Rebecca), 1 F 0-10.
Listed next to Alexander is the family of Robert McConnell. Robert's wife appears to have died before the 1820 census unless she was 10-16.
