James sailed from Londonderry Ireland on the ship George and Ann on 9 May 1729 arriving at either Willmington, DE or Philadelphia, PA with a number of his brothers. He was a farmer and a blacksmith. He and his wife were great great grandparents of Benjamin Harrison, 23rd President of the United States.
In about the 1730s, James Irwin and his wife Jane/Jean McDowell, and their several children, joined a colony in Cumberland (now Franklin) County, PA. With his two brothers he first settled in the lower end of the Cumberland Valley, eight miles west of the Susquehanna River, on a winding, crooked, mountain stream, Conodoguinet Creek.
James Irwin was a blacksmith and a farmer, and later, a distiller. He was also a devout Presbyterian.
An extract from the will of James Irwin, dated May 26, 1776:
I will that the plantation where on my son-in-law, Aaron Torrence, and my daughter Elizabeth live, be sold at the direction of my executors, one third of the value thereof be given to my daughter Elizabeth and the remainder to be equally divided among her children born to William McConnell and to my daughter Elizabeth Irwin McConnell.
