Jacob McConnell was born on September 10, 1825 in Greene County, Ohio. The year on his tombstone and his obituary was 1825 and his birthday was September 10. Jacob McConnell always put on census records that he was born in Ohio. The year of birth on census records varied but we know he was at least born by 1825 since the first census record in Ross Twp, Greene Co., Ohio in 1830 show him 5 to 9 years old.
Jacob's father was John W. McConnell and the name of his mother is unknown. She had died by 1829 when John W. McConnell married his second wife Eliza Ann Barber.
On April 15, 1852 Jacob married Elizabeth (Colwell) Spurgeon in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio. On Jacob's marriage registration, McConnell is spelled "McKonnel." Elizabeth's maiden name was Colwell, and her father, Boseal Colwell, was born in French Canada around 1785. Boseal was one of the first settlers in Defiance County, settling in a log cabin in Highland Township near an upper branch of the Maumee River in 1833. He was French Canadian, and the French Canadians were the first settlers in the area.
Jacob's wife, Elizabeth Colwell, had previously married Samuel Spurgeon in Defiance County on December 20, 1849. In the 1850 census, taken about June 1850, Elizabeth Colwell was living with her family. Other than the record of the marriage to Elizabeth Colwell, no record could be found that Samuel Spurgeon lived or died in Defiance County, Ohio, and what happened to him is a mystery.
There was a family story told to me by my grandfather, Everett Jacob McConnell, that Elizabeth Colwell and Jacob McConnell eloped and escaped down the river together. This story isn't true. In 1855 Jacob was in Highland Township, Defiance County Ohio for an enumeration census three years after his marriage. Two children were born in Ohio. In 1857 Jacob and Elizabeth moved to Cold Springs Township, Shelby County, IL, accompanied by Taylor Colwell, Elizabeth's brother, and Taylor's wife Susan (Beard) Colwell. They lived next to each other when the 1860 census was taken.
On September 26, 1855, in Cold Spring Township, Shelby County, Illinois John W. McConnell, Jacob McConnell's father, purchased 80 acres of federal public domain land for $200. The legal description of this land is Section 29, Township 10 North, Range 2E, Section SWNW and section NWSW. The land includes the junction of Stoney Creek and Beck's Creek. An additional 40 acres was added to this land by Boseal McConnell on November 26, 1879 in a sale of railroad land.
Jacob named his first daughter Mariah Jane. This might have been the name of his mother. Jacob's uncle, William McConnell, named his daughter Nancy Mariah McConnell and Jacob may have known her when growing up and liked the name. He also named a daughter Nancy, which could also possibly be named after his cousin.
The first record of Jacob McConnell in Shelby County, Illinois was an arrest record on April 10, 1857. John W. McConnell, Jacob McConnell and a John Smith were arrested for "gaming" which was defined as playing at cards for money. The gaming charge required bail of about $75 which was paid by John W. McConnell, Wesley King (probably John McConnell's employer since he was listed next to him in the 1860 census) and Moses Spurgeon (a neighbor near Jacob and John Smith). The gaming charge wasn't settled for a couple of years because the three successfully eluded authorities for a couple of years.
We know from court documents that John W. McConnell had some legal problems. On April 10, 1858 John W. McConnell and Samuel Hall signed a promissory note to pay $168.50 plus interest to Hardy Warren. This wasn't paid back so John W. McConnell was sued on March 19, 1859. The case was settled and closed on September 15, 1859.
In the 1860 census, Cold Springs Twp, Shelby Co., IL, Jacob is shown as 28 years old , a farm laborer, with a personal estate of $190. The birthdate is too low by at least seven years. Jacob was living next door to Taylor Colwell, Elizabeth Colwell McConnell's brother. Taylor Colwell was renting and he lived with his wife and two young children. After a couple years he returned to Defiance County, Ohio.
Although John W. McConnell purchased land and was involved in a series of legal issues, it hasn't been easy to prove it was John W. McConnell who was there and not Jonathan McConnell, also often called John McConnell, who lived in Cold Springs Township. However, in the 1860 census, which was badly damaged and much of it lost, only two McConnell households can be found in the census. There was Jacob McConnell and Jonathan McConnell a second cousin, both laborers. Both of them had only a small amount of money and the amount of real estate owned by each was zero. Since there was a John W. McConnell who owned land in 1855, and we know that land stayed in the family until the late 1920s, another John McConnell, other than the John McConnell listed in the 1860 census, owned the land.
A family story says that Jacob avoided the Civil War by having all his teeth pulled out. This story could not been confirmed. A researcher of the area told me she had heard this exact same story many times from different people and that the story usually wasn't true. It was just a favorite story to tell by the people of that area. Jacob was listed in the Civil War draft registration. He is indexed as Jacob McCounell, living in Cold Spring Twp. The actual writing looks more like McConnell. He is shown as 26 years old and single. This would make him a full 10 years younger than what is believed to be his age and he wouldn't have been single. Possibly he went through some marital difficulties, or else the census was just inaccurate. With that age and single, he would have been a good candidate for the draft.
In 1865 there was a listing in an Illinois census, Cold Springs Twp, Shelby Co., IL where there is a J. McCannell.
1 M 20-60 (Jacob), 2 M 0-10 (Boseal, John H.).
1 F 20-60 (Elizabeth), 2 F 10-20 (Mariah, Mary), 1 F 0-10 (Christina).
The record for the 1870 census could not be found. Much of that census was damaged. The John McConnell who was a second cousin moved to Grundy County Missouri. He was back again by 1880. In the 1870 census in Trenton Twp in Grundy Co., MO, Jonathan's cousin William was listed with his wife Persis and his children Willard, Viola and Martha. This is one of the few links that show Jonathan was related to the family of William McConnell and Catherine Rush. The other indication was a 64 out of 67 marker DNA match with Robert Clark McConnell (Jacob McConnell's descendant) and Michael N. McConnell, a descendant of William McConnell through his son Jackson McConnell. This match gives near certainty of a common ancestor within very few generations.
In the 1880 census, Cold Springs Twp, Shelby Co., IL, p. 51, Jacob is shown as born in September 1827, a farmer, born in Ohio, with both parents from Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was age 45, her father born in French Canada and her mother from Ohio. Jacob owned his own farm, free of any mortgage.

Jacob McConnell raised ten children, all of whom married and had children. They all lived to reasonably old ages. The health of the family was remarkable for those times because in most families usually a third to a half of the children usually succumbed to illnesses while in this family not a single family member appears to have been lost. Jacob McConnell lived to be 82. His wife, Elizabeth Colwell McConnell, died just short of 90 years old.
Obituary, October 15, 1907, Pana, Illinois
Jacob McConnell, aged 82 years, one of the early pioneers of this section, died at his home southeast of this city Saturday after a long illness due to Bright's disease. Mr. McConnell is survived by his wife and ten children. He had been a farmer in Shelby County for many years and made it a profitable business. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from New Hope Church, Rev. Mr. Keyes officiating.
