Thomas McConnell was born and grew up on a farm at Cold Springs Township, Shelby Co. [1]. He farmed at Town Hill Township, Shelby Co., IL when he married Elizabeth Clark on March 15, 1899. Later he farmed at Cold Springs Township, probably at the original family farm. He was married at George Clark's residence at Oconee Township, Shelby Co., IL. in a ceremony performed by a Baptist clergy man named Elder Elga Beckett [2]. He could read and write (unlike his parents) and he owned his farm subject to a mortgage [3]. He had problems with alcoholism [4]. He considered himself to be French/Irish, he wrote this as his race on his marriage certificate-- his mother was half French Canadian.

According to probate documents, File Box 289, he died intestate on July 11, 1927. Elizabeth C. McConnell administered his estate which included $350 bonds, a 105 acre farm, livestock & household goods. He owed money to William and Ann
Gatons, $57.00, Brooks and Ida Jones, $200.00, C.E.Corley and F.E. Corley, $500.00 and Lulu and Bert Halbrook, $200.00. These were cousins who had an interest in the farm which was previously owned by Jacob McConnell. Notices were published in the Shelbyville Daily Union.

Ellis Clark lost her prospective husband in a snowstorm and came to live for a while with Elizabeth Clark, her sister. Mary Jane Clark, Ellis' daughter, was raised by Elizabeth McConnell and later married Gene Anderson. She provided me with photos, high school year books, and much insight into this family.
