Everett Jacob McConnell was born and grew up at the family farm started by his grandfather Jacob McConnell at Cold Springs Township, Shelby County, Illinois. He was the oldest of two boys and he was a large, strong man. In his younger
days he was good at wrestling and he always looked strong, even when he was over 80 years old. He did not like his given name so throughout his life he was known as "Mac."
Mac was the first in his family to go to college. In 1926 he earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Illinois. In the same year he married Ruth Franklin, who he had met while he was working as a waiter at a restaurant. In 1929 he earned a Master of Science in Farm Management. He completed his education in the fall of 1934 when he completed his work at the Doan Agricultural Service Rural Appraisal School.
Jobs Mac held include:
Field Assistant in Cost Accounting, University of Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station
Assistant Farm Advisor, Sangamon County, Illinois
Farm Manager, Citizens National Bank, Decatur, Illinois
Farm Management Specialist, U.S. Soil Erosion Service, LeRoy, Illinois
Loan Fieldman, Hudson Burr Company, Bloomington, IL (Managers for Aetna Life Insurance Company)-- northwest Illinois territory.
Loan Correspondent and Farm Appraiser for Illinois, Equitable Life Insurance Company of Iowa for about ten years.
In 1936 Mac opened the McConnell Real Estate Service which did farm and city sales, trades and appraisals. From 1945 to 1967 he operated McConnell Homes, Inc., which was a builder-dealer for National Homes Corporation of Lafayette,
Indiana. This business built about 400 homes in Decatur, Illinois.
Mac was one of the first accredited farm appraisers. He was awarded Certificate No. 22 in 1939 by the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. He was also a member of the Illinois Society of Professional farm Managers and Rural Appraisers as well as the Decatur Board of Realtors. He was a licensed real estate broker in Illinois since 1935.
When Mac retired he went on trips to many different parts of the world. He traveled to Russia, Japan, Ireland, England and a great many other destinations. He took lots of pictures and would show them to relatives in slide shows. Mac and Ruth lived in Decatur until the last years of their lives when they moved into the apartment below the house where the family of Jon McConnell lived at SW 615 Cityview, Pullman, Washington.
Mac died of respiratory arrest caused by pneumonia. He was living in the Whitman Convalescent Center in Colfax, Whitman County, Washington at the time. His ashes were taken to Decatur, IL, where he was buried.
