Abraham McConnell, and his son William, entered the colonies at the port of Philadelphia. They first settled in the southwestern section of Pennsylvania, then crossed the North Mountain to settle in Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia). William married Mary Cowan and they had ten children. Does anyone know this family? Were William and Mary married in Scotland, Pennsylvania, or Virginia? From what part of Scotland did the McConnells come? Any information will be most welcome.

This info is from Bridgforth genie: p 58 showing Wm & Adam McC as original immigrants along w/ father, Adam. "Wm's house is still standing and in use in McConnellsville, Pennsylvania. He sold his land there to his brother Dan'l & moved out west, but his son Abram . . . moved from McCvl to Martinsville [sic, i.e., Martinsburg], Va., then in Va, but now in WV. While there Abram was a member of Tuscarora Pres Ch. Left that church in 1763, moved to Wash Co & in 1794 purchased land near the Green Spring Pres Ch, with which ch he affiliated."

The following information is from notes that I took at the National Archives on December 4, 1995: R6643
Declaration of James S McConnell, administrator of estate of father, Abram McConnell, deceased, soldier of Revolution in regard to act of Congress June 7, 1832; State of Virginia, Washington County, February 25, 1856.
Appeared James S. McConnell.
Abram, a private, resided in County of Berkeley and entered army in the volunteers (probably in 1776 under commission of Captain George Scott in the blank regiment of blank Virginia troops. That he was honorably discharged at Basking Ridge [New Jersey] on April 1, 1777.
Married Rosanna and Berkeley on May 3, 1780. Rosanna and died in Washington County on May 8, 1846, leaving the following children: Abram, James, Thomas, William (deceased). All three you were living in Washington County and 1856, applied for headstone. Copy of discharge.
Moved about 1793 from Berkeley to Washington County.
Abram McConnell was with the Virginia men under Campbell. After the war he received a land grant and settled in Blount County, [Tennessee], where he founded McConnell Station, very near the Holston [I have Houston] settlement. Keying's mountain book, page 203, paragraph 6.
David Campbell, former governor of Virginia, wrote: When I was a boy going to school, Abram McConnell removed to the County of Washington from Berkeley or Frederick County and purchased and settled on a plantation where he lived for the rest of his life. My school was in his neighborhood. I became acquainted with him and Mrs. McConnell. After I've reached manhood and engaged in public business and settled in Abingdon Mrs. McConnell "a fine old lady became intimate in my family. I always considered Mr. McConnell a man of truth and great respectability although he indulged a good deal in habits of intemperance."
Served with William Eakins or Aikins. John McCauly.
[His children] obstinately rely on what they have heard him say.
Benjamin Reed, surety for James McConnell.
