Most of the following is from "A History Of the Fee Family," by
Colonel Ralph E. Pearson.
John Fee Sr. was from Ireland. He was a Presbyterian and he
came with his wife Sarah Stuart and his son John sometime before
1770. They spent the first winter at Mount Union in Huntingdon
County six miles east of Mills Creek (east of the Borough of
Huntingdon). They lived in a fort for about five years starting
about 1777 at Carmichael's fort, at the mouth of the Augelevic and
Progmore's fort at Mill Creek, as a protection against attacks by
the British and Indians. John Fee settled at the mouth of the Raytown
branch of the Juanita river in Huntingdon County before the Revolution
and is shown there in the 1790 census as the head of a family of one
male over 16, one male under 16, and one female. Most of the land
John Fee had was leased from Reverend William Smith who lived in
Philadelphia.
William Smith founded the town of Huntingdon, which was originally
called by the Indian name Standing Stone in 1767. The town is located
in the Juniata Valley in the Appalachian mountains in south central
Pennsylvania. Huntingdon County at the top of Juniata valley and it is
mountainous, forrested land-- not very desirable land and the last part
of the valley to be settled.
John Fee died around 1800 and is buried beside his son (Colonel John Fee)
at Mill Creek 45 miles east of Altoona on a farm owned (in the late
1800s) by a man named Porter.
From a letter, author unknown:
"From where he rests he could see all the river land he possessed from
Mill Creek to Raystown Branch. Where he is buried was a family or private
grave yard, but it has long become a public cemetery and is a beautiful
place."
