John married Cynthia Williams and lived in West Middletown.
Per Abel Bailey, John McConnell was a notable hunter in Richland Co., OH when he arrived in 1818, per Ashland Co., OH Biographies.
JOHN McCONNELL, brother of Mrs. Solomon Urie, [actually his nephew] located in Orange township about the same time that the Uries came. He was an accomplished backwoodsman and Indian fighter. He was a relative of the famous Alexander McConnell, of Washington county, Pennsylvania, and also a relative of Colonel Williamson [through marriage]. He had many encounters with the Indians in the border wars, and in the Miami and Wabash country; and is believed to have settled in number of accounts with the Green and Jerometown Indians after he came to this county. Being a bachelor, while a resident of Orange township, he spent a good deal of time in his forest camps, hunting deer, bear, wolves, and other game. He had lost many dear friends in the border wars; and hence had no very strong attachments for his red neighbors. He never hesitated, when threatened with danger by the Indians, as he roamed through the forest, to face his foe, and resent impending attacks; particularly when he met savages who had made themselves conspicuous in murdering the border settlers.
Some thirty-five years since, when game had grown scarce in the region, McConnell sought a new home in the wilds of Wood county, where he remained a few years, and then located in Eaton county, Michigan, where he died.
Hardy, frank and fearless, he seemed to enjoy a lonely hut in the wilderness, like Boone and Kenton, more than the restraints of civilized society.

ANIEL SUMMERS Was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania May 27, 1788, and came to Orange Township, Richland County Ohio in 1818, and located on section ten, where he died, August 15, 1863, aged seventy-five years and seventeen days.
The first settlers, Mrs. Summers states, were: Philip Fluke, James Clark, Peter Biddinger (the first gunsmith), Thomas Donley, Robert Mickey, Mr. Wheeler and sons, William Patterson, John McConnell, William McConnell, George McConnell and others, now nearly all gone.
In an account by Samuel Robertson, on life in Ashland (the Richland County) in 1818 and 1819.

ROBERT CULBERTSON removed to Orange Township in September, 1825. He had been a resident of Belmont County many years previous. His family, when he removed to the township, consisted of his wife and two children, Thomas Culbertson and Mrs. James Hamilton, all of whom are yet residents of Orange Township. His land, when he removed to it, had not been disturbed by the axe or plow, and the wall of the first cabin erected by him are yet standing upon his place.
An Indian creates a Panic...
During the first year Mr. Culbertson removed to the township, a controversy had arisen between Peter Biddinger, a gunsmith, and an Indian named "Jim Jerk," about the pay for the repair of the Indian's gun. Jim had refused to meet the cost of the repairs, and on Mr. Biddinger's refusal to deliver it to him without pay, he made threats of vengeance. The following year the Indian was discovered lurking about the neighborhood, and his conduct was such as excited suspicion. A company of thirteen men at once organized to scour the country, and if possible capture him and obtain an explanation of his conduct. A diligent search, commencing at daybreak and ending at a late hour of the night, proved fruitless, and all returned home except John McConnell, who continued his pursuit about three days, when he reappeared and advised Mr. Biddinger and the neighborhood that he had made a satisfactory and final settlement with Jim Jerk. The Indian was never seen or heard of again.
