INDEX

[24437] Adam McConnell never married and is believed to be the last surviving male McConnell descended from Daniel McConnell, the founder of McConnellsburg. His father, Daniel McConnell, Jr. died in Indiana County, PA, probably before 1820 since he does not appear in the 1820 census. Daniel McConnell, Jr. did not leave a will (he is not in the index of testators for the county). The 1800 census for Daniel McConnell shows there were at least two more brothers. However, these brothers were never mentioned by Adam McConnell who provided detailed information to historians, so it is assumed they probably died young.

The woman Adam McConnell lived with over many years appears to have been his sister. A history of the Rural Valley Presbyterian Church:
"Adam McConnell, James E. Caruthers and Isaac Rhea were ordained elders by Mr. Forbes April 1, 1851. Adam McConnell was an elder thirty-one years. He died March 6, 1882. He was never married. He devoted himself to this good work. The service of the Lord gave him a ready sympathy of heart and freshness of life. He was a very substantial Christian."

1830 Census, Allegheny Twp, Armstrong Co., PA Indexed as "Adam Mnnel."
1 M 20-30 (Adam), 1 F 20-30 (Elizabeth-- Adam's sister).

1840 Census, Kitaning Borough, Armstrong Co., PA.
1 M 30-40 (Adam), 1 F 30-40 (Elizabeth), 1 F 60-70 (Adam and Elizabeth's mother?).

"This church was incorporated by the court of common pleas of this county June 26, 1841. The trustees named in the charter were Alexander Colwell, ADAM MCCONNELL, A. L. Robinson, Joseph McCartney, Darwin Phelps, John R. Johnston and James E. Brown, who were to continue as such until the election to be held on the third Wednesday of November then next."

1850 Census, Cowanshannock Twp, Armstrong Co., PA
Adam McConnell, 50, PA
Elizabeth McConnell, 52, PA (Adam's sister).
Elizabeth Ganing, 32, b. PA

1850 Census, Kitanning Twp, Armstrong Co., PA In the household headed by Matilda Robinson-- duplicate census record.

1870 Census, Cowanshannock Twp, Armstrong Co., PA
Adam McConnell, 71, Farmer, $2000, $200, b. PA.
Elizabeth McConnell, 74, b. PA (Adam's sister)
Elizabeth Kanning, 59, b. PA.

1880 Census, town of Rural Valley, Atwood, Cowanshannock Twp, Armstrong Co., PA
James C. Oaks, M, 31, Farmer, b. PA. Both parents were born PA Note: this is incorrect, his father was born in Maine.
Emaline " , F, 27, wife, b. PA. Both parents were born in PA.
H.H. " , M, 8, son, b. PA "
G.A.M. Cannings, F, 13, niece, b. PA " (She is probably related to to the woman in the 1860 and 1870 census).
Adam Mc Connell, M, 82, uncle, b. PA Retired Old Farmer

Since in the 1880 census, Adam McConnell was described as an uncle of James C. Oaks and his wife Emeline, I researched the ancestry of James C. Oaks and Elizabeth (Morrison) Oaks to find out exactly how they are related. A newspaper article shows James C. Oaks and Emeline Morrison were married at Union Twp, Jefferson Co., PA on June 9, 1870 and they are listed together in Union Township, Jefferson County, PA in the 1870 census. James was listed as age 21 and Emeline as age 18.

James C. Oaks' father was Stephen Douglas Oaks, born in Maine and living in Union Township, Jefferson County, PA and he appears with James C. Oaks in the 1850 and 1860 census. His mother was Christina McGonigle. James C. Oaks does not appear to be related in any way to Adam McConnell except by marriage to Emeline. The fact that Stephen Oaks, James C. Oak's father, was born in Maine makes it unlikely that the Oaks family is related to the McConnell family. The McMonigle family appears to have come from Westmoreland County, PA.

Emaline Morrison and her family could not be found in the 1860 census in either Jefferson County or the adjoining county, Clarion County.

Adam McConnell did not leave a will (he could not be found in the testator's index for Armstrong County PA). Adam McConnell provided a lot of information to James Potts, an historian, which was published in various histories. I think it is safe to assume that McConnellsburg historians would have mentioned any more descendants of Daniel McConnell, Jr. if any existed.

A Reverend Samuel D. McConnell, who died in January, 1939, appeared in newspaper articles and events as a descendent of Daniel McConnell of McConnellsburg. Per his obituary published in a McConnellsburg newspaper, he was the first contributor for a memorial for Daniel McConnell in an anniversary for the town of McConnellsburg. Research into his ancestry showed he was born in 1846 in Salem Township, Westmoreland County, PA, a son of David McConnell. David McConnell was the grandson of the Daniel McConnell who emmigrated from Colerain Twp to Salem Township, Westmoreland, PA around 1800. So while Samuel D. McConnell was a descendant of a Daniel McConnell, it was another person with the same name.

William MCCONNELL

Family 1 : Unknown

INDEX

[28753] Yes. Charles Orrick married Mary Campbell who was the daughter ofJames Campbell (died -1817) and his wife Sarah Campbell (his cousin)who md. in 1772, James was the son of Dougal Campbell (1744-1817).These Campbells resided on Middle Creek nr. Middletown (renamed Gerrardstown), Berkeley Co, [W]VA, the same area where several McConnell's lived including William McConnell (1750-1807) who is buried in Gerrardstown Presby Cem. Since James Campbell was forrage master in 1781-82 supplying soldiers in Redstone Fort in Fayette Co, PA, I wondered if there could be a connection between the McConnells of Berkeley Co. [W]VA and those in Fayette Co, PA. (Source: Martha W. Campbell's 1972 booklet on James Campbell's family at the Berkeley County Historical Society).
1890 "History of Lower Shenandoah Valley, Cos. of Frederick, Berkeley, Jefferson & Clarke" by J.E. Norris, pub. Chicago by A. Warner (FHL book 975.59 H2n)
Pg.227: Berkeley County. At this court, August, 1772, the first license ... As a matter for preservation the following "first grand jury" is copied: John Smith, foreman; Hezekiah Swearingen, Josiah Swearingen, Joseph Barnes, Martin Antler, Joseph Turner, Abraham Smith, John Taylor, Samuel Taylor, Jonathan Simmons, George Cunningham, William McConnell, Jacob Beller, Andrew McCormick, Matt Duncan, John Sewell, Thomas Lafferty and George Creamer.

25 Oct 1776 [When the House of Representatives of the State of Virginia planned to pass human rights legislation, the Tuscorara Congregation initiated the following petition that their members signed. The members of the Back Creek Congregation who felt the same signed as well.] It reads: "To the Honourable Speaker & House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Humble Petition of the Dissenters from the Ecclesiastical Establishment of Tuscorara Congregation Berkley County, Humbly Showeth That your petitioners being in common with the other Inhabitants of this commonwealth, delivered from British oppression, rejoice in the prospect of having their freedom maintained to them & Posterity inviolate: The hopes of your Petitioners have been raised and confirmed by the Declaration of your Hon'ble House in the last article of rights which we beg leave to recite viz: 'That Religion or the Duty we owe to our Creator, & the manner of discharging it can be directed only to reason & conviction, not by force or violence; & therefore all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of Religion according to the Dictates of conscience & that is the mutual Duty of all to practice christian forebearance, Love, & Charity towards each other.' It will hence unavoidably follow that no Laws which are indefensible & Incompatible with the rights of conscience Should be suffered to remain unrepealed for if it be proper that such rights should be possessed in any extent, it is also proper there should be a legal security for the possession of them; & that they may not be trampled upon through the possible caprice of men in power, or some unaccountable turn in the sentiments of the public. The' y'r Petitioners would not be understood to insinuate that there is at present any likelihood of such an infringement yet we humbly conceive the rights of human Nature and Religion. Liberty in its fullest extent is one of these. Should never lie at the mercy of any; But on the contrary should have every protection & Ground of security which Law & the Policy of free States can give them. The Ecclesiastic Establishment is what your petitioners have ever looked upon as grievous Burden and inconsistent with the rights of humanity either civil or religious, in as much as the supporting it while we can not approve it, is in our humble opinion, in infringement of all Civil Property, as well as our conscience. May it therefore please your Honorable House that the Ecclesiastical Establishment [page two of two] may be suspended or laid aside. Or your Petitioners otherwise relieved from the burden thereof: and your Petioners shall ever pray [first column] Hugh Vance, Wm Patterson [William Patterson], Hugh Lyle, Dougall Campbell, Jno Snodgrass Senr [John Snodgrass Sr], Jno McClean [John McClean], Jno Wilson [John Wilson], Matw Rippy [Mathew Rippy], David Miller, Duncan Campbell, Jno Lyle [John Lyle], Jno Hanna [John Hanna], Wm Hanna [William Hanna], Jno Daniel [John Daniel], Edwd Heard [Edward Heard], Jno Hart [John Hart], Saml Park [Samuel Park], Jno Park [John Park], Gilbert McConn [?
