From *P* member Barbara Lange GGCW13A Jan 92 "From the Torrey book: New England
Marriages Prior to 1700... Foote, Nathaniel (1593-1644) m Eliz. Deming
(1595-1683), in England, bef 1616, resided at Watertown. She m/2 Thomas
Welles. Nathaniel Foote, s/o Robert and Joane (Brooke) Foote was b in Eng in
1593. He's listed as being of Shalford Parish, Essix and St. Mary Bothaw
parish, London. He was m about 1615 to Elizabeth Deming. She was the d/o John
of Shalford Colchester, England and was b there ca 1595. John Deming is
reported to have been connected with the hugenots, as desc's of this man are
members of the "Federation of Hugenot Society", also dec's of this John Deming
are said to be listed in Wurts; "Magna Charta" books. Nathaniel and Eliz.
Foote came to New England at a very early data. The 1st record of him is at
Watertown, MA where his name is mentioned in the "Records of the Colony of
Mass.," May, 1633, when he took the "Oath of Freeman."
From "The Macomber Family", Harold Haze Macomber, Ventura, CA 1981 ... p 9 ...
"on 21 Sep 1608/9 he apprenticed himself for 8y to Samuel CROYEYE, a Colchester
grocer. Nathaniel was a grocer himself, as of 18 Oct 1619, when he bought a
messuage from Beatrice Barker, Esq., located on East Street, St. James Parish,
Colchester. In 1630 the family was living in St. Mary Bothaw Parish, from
whence they immigrated to New England on board the FORTUNE. They were in
Watertown, MA by 03 Sep 1633, when Nathaniel took the freeman's oath and owned
a homestead of 16 acres with a 2 acre salt marsh....in 1635 the family removed
to Wethersfield, CT where Nathaniel was one of the ten "adventurers" who bought
the land directly from the Wongunk Indians, an area located along the CT River
known as Pyguaq, later named Wethersfield. Early Wethersfield had only one
street, Broad Street, later called Front Street.... Nathaniel was primarily a
farmer, but also served as Deputy to the General Court 1641-44.
From "The Foote Family Genealogy," by Abram Foote, after settling in Watertown,
..."Then came the search after a new home, and after fourteen days of travel in
the wilderness, he, with the rest of the company, settled in Wethersfield. We
do not know the reason for this move, although it was stated at the time that
the settlers in Watertown "wanted more room for their cattle." It is more
probable, however, that it was the outcome of some theological dispute which
led to the new settlement. Later disputs of the same kind let do the
settlement of Stamford, CT, in 1640; Branford in 1644, and Hadley, MA, in 1659.
The records of Wethersfield show that Nathaniel Foote took title to a farm on
Febraru 21, 1637, and the purchase of this tract made him the largest holder of
adventure lands in the settlement. The word "adventure" in this case being
used to describe lands the title of which did not come from the town. This
settlement of Wethersfield was the beginning of what is now the State of
Connecticut."
