Good morning Robert. Yes, George was a very early entrant into what became the US and I am happy to share what information I have.
George was born September 27, 1725 in Scotland, supposedly the son of William and Sarah Carson McConnell. It is said that he came from the vicinity of Berwick Upon the Tweed. It is unknown when he arrived here, but he was in the what is now the NY City area to marry Martha Seely on April 8, 1751 at Bedford, NY, Westchester County. He and his wife were members of the Church of Salem (Presbyterian), officially entered as members into the church records October 8, 1759.
Children:
Martha
Thaddeus Seely
Sarah
George
Eli
Lydia
James
Dorcas (Patty)
William
George earned his living as a tutor, and lived variously in upstate NY and Massachusetts. Three of his sons, George, Eli and Thaddeus are on record as having fought in the Revolutionary War. George was supposedly buried at Pittstown, NY however his grave has yet to be located.
George's wife Martha was born June 29, 1730 of Jonathan and Electa Seely of Bedford, NY. Upon being widowed, she moved to Town of Marshall Oneida County NY to live with son Thaddeus. She briefly remarried an Abner Hitchcock but was residing with Thaddeus on her death of (I believe) scarlet fever. She is buried in the McConnell Cemetery on Post St. Town of Marshall Oneida County NY.
Yes, I do have the will stored away. I need to locate it and find a copy machine that will handle its unusual width and length and will be happy to share this with you. If you need any further information on any of the above, please let me know.
