Richard McConnell was born at Wellsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia), and came to Wheeling in 1832. He was a cooperage manufacturer, established one of the first plants of the kind in Wheeling, and operated it throughout his business career. He died in 1887, at the age of seventy-three years. He married a Miss Holmes, who was a native of Virginia, and died before her husband. Eleven children were born to their union, but three of whom are living, namely: J. W., who is in the employ of his brother; Ella, who lives with the subject hereof; and W. W., whose name appears at the head of these lines.
Per 1880 census, both of his parents were from Ireland. The 1880 census and 1860 census shows he was born in Ohio. Other censuses show he was born in Virginia.

Per a genealogy of the Rush family we know that William McConnell, married Catherine Rush and moved to Aleppo Twp, Greene County, PA around 1825. Per Rush genealogists, Catherine Rush was born in Salt Lick Twp, Fayette Co., PA and married there.
1820 Luzerne Twp John McConnell: 1 male 45+, 2 males 16-25 (William,John), 1 male 10-16(Samuel?)
1 fem 45+, 1 fem 16-26, 1 fem 10-16.
Per the 1820 census, someone was engaged in manufacture.
Note: In this census record, Benjamin McConnell is crossed out and John McConnell is written above it. Possibly either John McConnell or William had a second name Benjamin.
They lived in Greene Co., Aleppo Twp, PA, in 1830. In a biography about Nancy McConnell, b. Sept 10, 1828, who married a man named Martin Ealy, she said her father was Benjamin McConnell from Greene County, PA. After a long unsuccessful search for a Benjamin McConnell I concluded it must have been that William called himself Benjamin, his middle name.
We know from the Rush family genealogy and other sources that William McConnell moved in the mid 1830s to Bristol Twp, Morgan County, Ohio near McConnellsville.
1830 Census, Aleppo Township, Greene County, PA.

The LDS I.G.I. has an Alfred McConnell, who would be age 9, b. 1841, OH, as part of this family. However he wasn't in the 1850 census or any other census found.
