From History of Muskingum Co., Ohio
During this year (1806), came, also, Joseph Evans and family, George Crain and family ; Joseph Vernon, wife, and twelve children ; John Echel- berger, Jacob Livingood, and Elijah Hart. The latter two were from Pennsylvania. John Walters came soon after, probably early in 1806, during which year General Robert McConnell, from Pennsylvania, came and settled on the land now owned by William Fox. It is said that these pioneers died on, or very near, the places they settled, excepting Robert McConnell, who removed to McConnellsville, which place he started.
In War of 1812 he was a Lt. Colonel at the head of McConnell's Regiment, Ohio Militia.

Historical Background [Legal Opinion Regarding his donation to Public Schools]
The real property in question was conveyed to the Treasurer of Morgan County and his
successors in office by a deed dated August 7, 1851, and recorded March 9, 1852. The deed
reflects that, in 1817 when Morgan County was being organized by commissioners appointed by
the General Assembly, Robert McConnell, the founder of McConnelsville, became bound to
convey among other valuable donations by him to be given for public and beneficial purposes,
certain real property in Trust for the use of schools, in case the aforesaid commissioners
should locate and establish the seat of Justice for said Morgan County at said Town of
McConnelsville. The commissioners did select McConnelsville as the county seat, but the land
was not conveyed during Robert McConnells lifetime. Following his death, his son, James A.
McConnell, acting as executor of the estate, conveyed the property...
