In 1860 he was living in Cedarville Twp, Greene Co., OH with the family of A. Foster with his brother, Joseph G. McConnell.
On September 11, 1862 he enlisted as a Private in Company K, 121st Regiment Ohio Infantry at the age of 21. He was at the battles of Perryville, Chickamauga, Resacca and other engagements. He was promoted to Full Corporal. He was wounded in the heel at Chickamauga and in a skirmish near Avonsborough N.C. his knee was shattered which resulted in amputation. He was discharged for wounds from Company K, 121st Infantry Regiment Ohio on 14 Jun 1865 at David's Island, NY Harbor.

He returned to Greene County and worked at his trade, which was harness making. The next spring he went to Muskingum County. In 1873 he came to Belle Centre and is doing good business.
In 1870 he was listed as "A F McConnel" in Belle Centre, Richland Twp, Logan Co., OH.
In 1880 he was listed as "A. F. Mc Connell" in Richland Twp, Logan Co., OH.
