Francis McConnell came to Kentucky in 1775 with the McClelland Expedition with his cousins Francis and William McConnell (sons of James McConnell who died in 1776/1777 in Peters Twp, Cumberland (later Franklin) Co., PA. He claimed a 1,000 preemption southwest of Lexington and southwest of his McConnell cousins.
The Historical Quarterly of the Filson Club, Volume 3 has a John Draper interview of Mrs. Thomas. That interview describes Francis McConnell's death on page 229

Francis and several others went outside Fort Harrod one day to practice shooting. They were fired on by Indians and Francis McConell was shot down about a 100 yards south of the fort. The others escaped. Francis lay all day behind a log, signaling for others to come rescue him. Toward night several men including Silas Harlan, James Ray, hollered and shot toward the Indians and scared them off. Francis McConnell was finally brought in through a hole dug under the fort. He died a day later and he was buried in the southwest corner of the fort.
Alexander McConnell, his brother, came to Kentucky in the spring of 1778 to handle Francis McConnell's estate. There was a deed that mentions some of the siblings of Francis McConnell. The reference is to Fayette County, KY, Burnt Records, v. 3, p. 148.
