Land records state that Alexander McConnell, as his brother's heir, was entitled to his brother Francis's 1,400 acres of land on account of first, Francis's raising a crop of corn on it in 1776, and secondly, Alexander's settlement on this land in 1778. This Alexander later gave a deposition in Scott Co., KY that he had settled at Lexington in 1779.
Virginia Warrant #302. VA Patent # 2707. 1000 acres were granted to Alexander McConnell at heir for Francis McConnell on March 22, 1780. 400 pounds was paid into the treasury. The original preemption warrant was entered April 29th 1780. The survey date was June 2nd 1783. The seal of the state was affixed July 15, 1785. The land was two miles from Lexington on the South Fork of the Elkhorn River. Preston's settlement was to the east. An old military settlement was to the north. Robert Patterson's land was on the southwest border of this land and William "Buck Elk" McConnell's land was on the southeast border. John McConnell, who was Alexander McConnell's brother, and Alan Campbell served as chain bearers for the survey. The marker for the survey was Francis McConnell (brother of William "Buck Elk" McConnell). The survey was done by William "Buck Elk" McConnell and the survey was certified by Thomas Marshall.
Virginia Patent #1345. A 400 acre settlement was granted to Alexander on March 22, 1780 as heir at law of Francis McConnell's estate. 160 pounds were paid into the treasury. The surveyed land was entered April 29th 1780. The official survey date was February 10, 1783. Land returned Sept 27, 1783. The seal of the state was affixed Jan 10, 1785. The land was two miles from Lexington on the South Fork of the Elkhorn River. Two branches of the Elkhorn River crossed through the property. The property bordered land owned by Preston and Lewis Craig. John Stevenson and Alan Campbell served as chain bearers for the survey. John McConnell and Alexander McConnell were marker pilots. William McConnell was the surveyor and John Marshall certified the survey.
Virginia Warrant #301. VA Patent #2705. A 400 acre preemption was granted to Alexander on March 22, 1780. 160 pounds was paid into the treasury. The surveyed land was recorded April 29th 1780. The official survey date was March 11, 1784. The seal of the state was affixed July 15, 1785. The land was six or seven miles from Lexington on the South Fork of the Elkhorn River. The South Fork of the Elkhorn River crossed through the southeast corner of the property. There was also a small creek that fed into the South Fork of the Elkhorn River. David Vance and John Harper served as chain bearers for the survey. William McConnell and John Marshall signed the survey.
Per Jane (Gay) Stevenson in a Draper Interview, Alexander McConnell was captured by Indians in April 1780 at McConnell's Station near Lexington, KY:
Alexander McConnell had been out to kill a deer and had skinned and swung it up. He then came in and borrowed a chestnut dun horse, having a white main and tale, of W[illia]m McConnell, and went out to bring it in. 5 Indians were on the look out. His horse was shot from under him, but fell on his leg, the one Indian wanted to kill him but the other Indian showed that only the horse was on his leg. This was Thursday and Tuesday he was gone. McConnell couldnt kill the Indian that had saved his life twice. He was the other side of the log. He got the Indians capps, blue (in the night, and he wanted to be dark,) and set his gun, and pipe, and tomahawk down.
The William McConnell referred to would be William "Buck Elk" McConnell, Alexander's cousin.
