Came to Pennyslvania with his parents, probably before the Revolution. Probably settled in Washington County, PA. Moved to Athens township in 1801, where he was one of the first white settlers and built one of the first horse-mills in that township. Younker's Genealogy has death date as October 16, 1831 instead of September 1831.
A descendant of John reports John and his wife came to Ohio in 1801. John and his sister, Elizabeth, took out two sections of land.
Per Historical Collections of Harrison County, Ohio, page 222 they purchased land as follows:
On April 20, 1804 John McConnell purchased 640 acres (one section) in Athens Twp, Harrison Co., OH at Section 5, Township 9, Range 5.
On July 14, 1806 John McConnell purchased 640 acres (one section) in East Athens Twp, Harrison Co., OH at Section 34, Township 8, Range 4.
On March 7, 1817 John McConnell was the asignee from George Cox of 160 acres in Moorefield Twp, Harrison Co., OH at section 5, Township 10, Range 6.
