Notes from the History of Woodford County
James was a major general who commanded the Kentucky militia for a number of years. Every year the militia would into camp for practice and discipline.
He owned the farm on Mundy's Landing Road about five miles out of Versailles, where he built a two-story brick house that still stands today, and is famous for its murals. The General was a state senator in 1824. He donated a corner of his land to the Baptists of the area for a church, which they named Hillsboro Baptist Church.
Woodford County was surveyed and the boundaries set in 1788. The land was taken from Fayette County, one of the three original counties of the District of Kentucky prior to statehood. At a later date, Franklin and Scott Counties were formed, taking a great amount of Woodford County and it's population.
Versailles [county seat] was established in 1792 and was the only incorporated town in the county from 1792 until 1835, when the village of Mortonsville was established. The town Midway was not established until 1846. Early settlers had to go to Lexington, Frankfort or Versailles for supplies.
The county is bounded on the south and west by the Kentucky River, on the northwest side by Franklin County, and on the northeast by Scott County. Fayette and Jessamine Counties lie to the east.
Woodford County was named for General Woodford, a Revolutionary War Officer.
Settlers in the 1770s included John Floyd, militia leader and surveyor; Col. William Steele; Joseph Lindsey, who explored Elkhorn Creek; John Lowery; Benjamin Berry, who explored the Falls of the Ohio; James McConnell, later involved in the founding of Cincinnati; and Robert Patterson, who helped settle Lexington. The early settlers clashed with Indians who sought to preserve their hunting grounds. Prehistoric Native Americans lived in what is now Woodford County at Lovedale, where their earthworks and burial sites are found. The county has two incorporated towns, Versailles and Midway, and includes the communities of Duckers, Faywood, Nonesuch, Pisgah, Troy, and Zion Hill.
Early settlers in Woodford County included:
Captain Elijah Craig; Col. Thomas Marshall; General Marquis Calmes; General Charles Scott; Major John Crittenden; General James McConnell; Major Herman Bowmar; Charles Buck III; Col. Richard Young; Capt. Virgil McCracken.
