Per the 1930 census, his father was born in Missouri and his mother in Illinois.
John Leslie McConnell, 65, pioneer valley farmer succumbed to a heart attack at his home east of El Centro Wed. a.m. He came to Imperial Valley in May of 1908 with his parents, who purchased a ranch of Sand Hills 4 miles east of El Centro. McConnell developed this ranch and added to it and lived there continuously until his death. He was long a booster of Imperial Valley and proud to be a pioneer of this growing area. He had been president of the Imperial Valley Milk Producer's Association for 16 years & until 6 months ago, when he resigned because of poor health. He was a member of the El Centro Lodge No. 384, a past commander of Knights Templar, a Member of El Centro lodge No. 109, Royal Arch Masons, past patron of Signal Chapter No. 276, Order of Eastern Star & a 1st Methodist church. He was an active member of the Farm Bureau. A native of California, he was born in Redlands & lived near Corona and Santa Ana where he rec'd most of his education.
Survivors are his widow, Callilyn, his daughter Mrs. Lois Baker, his son, Jack McConnell and 5 grandchildren, all them residing on the McConnell ranch. Masonic funeral services will be conducted with the Rev. Arthur Nagel officiating; interment will be at the family plot.
