[17341]
Francis McConnell first arrived in Kentucky in 1775 with an exploring party from Monongahela County, Virginia with Charles LeCompte and William McConnell.
He was part of the McClelland party who came to Kentucky in 1775. He owned a 1,000 acre preemption next to his cousin William McConnell's two miles south of Lexington, KY.
Per the deed, 1000 acres were granted to Francis as a preemption on October 15, 1779. 100 pounds were paid into the treasury. The surveyed land was recorded April 29th 1780. The official survey date was June 2nd 1783. The seal of the state was affixed July 15, 1785. The land was two miles from Lexington on the South Fork of the Elkhorn River. Robert Patterson's land was on the southwest border of the land and William "Buck Elk" McConnell's land was on the southeast border. John McConnell, who was Alexander McConnell's brother, and Alan Campbell served as chain bearers for the survey.
Francis was an agent for John Dunlap, a land speculator, and was in the Calf Pasture of Augusta County, VA in 1777 raising money for the Station.
Jane Stevenson, wife of Sam[ue]l Stevenson, was born Nov. 15 1750, in Augusta County, Virginia. She gave the following in an interview with Draper:"
Per Jane (Gay) Stevenson: We went down to McConnells Station 2nd April 1780. It was not settled till the day we went there. It took its name from Frances McConnell, and lay between Frances and W[illia]m McConnells places, and about between 1 and 1 1/4 miles from Lexington. Right where Royalls Mill now is on the rail-road. There was a grave yard there. Ja[me]s, Frances, and W[illia]m McConnell were cousins to Alexander and John McConnell.
Per the book William Haydon, Kentucky Adventurer, 1740-1819, John Patrick acquired a 4,000 acre military survey. Francis McConnell wanted to own the property and suggested to Patrick that he be allowed to present the military survey to the land commissioners as if it were his property and he would make a verbal agreement to compensate him later for the property. He explained that Patrick's reputation would be damaged if others thought he were excessively profiting from land speculation and be called a "land jobber." Francis McConnell didn't care about his own reputation. The agreement was concluded in 1779 and Francis McConnell acquired a 2000 acre tract of land in present day Woodford County at the western end of Hancock Taylor's 1774 military tract. This land interfered with claims by William Haydon.
The history about the land Francis McConnell owned in Woodford County, KY is very confusing. Per one survey found, 500 acres were granted to Francis on October 15, 1779. 200 pounds were paid into the treasury. Woodford County surveyed 183 acres by virtue of part of an entry for 500 acres. 1000 acres were entered May 16, 1780. This land was on the Kentucky River about one mile above Leestown. Adjacent land included land owned by William Hayden and Zachary Taylor. Per one survey found, 750 acres were owned across the Kentucky River and by Glenn's Creek from Francis McConnell by the heirs of Thomas McConnell. Who Thomas McConnell was is unknown at present since I have found no further references to Thomas McConnell. Per the Haydon book, Francis McConnell purchased land from William Hayden, two 400 acre tracts in Woodford County, Kentucky. This land, which apparently consisted of two 400 acre tracts, which was sold to Humphrey Marshall by James McConnell, heir of Francis McConnell on March 18, 1784. This land was surveyed December 24, 1794. Joseph Magness and Andrew Alsman were the chain bearers. Humphrey Marshall was the pilot. Survey was cerfified by William Steele.
500 acres were surveyed on March 22, 1784 for Francis Mcconnell on land entered May 16, 1780 lying on the waters of Lawrence Creek about two miles up the first large branch of said creek. The survey date would have been after Francis McConnell's death. Twp branches of the creek crossed through the middle of the 500 acres. Surveyed March 22, 1784. Chain men were James McKinley and John Black. Hugh Shannon directed the marker. William McConnell was the surveyor. Certified by Thomas Marshall. Recorded June 21, 1784. Seal affixed October 1, 1785. Since Francis McConnell died before March 1784, this transaction must have been completed by his heirs.
Surveyed for Francis McConnell, 746 acres, on August 30, 1783 by virtue of a treasury warrant entered August 16, 1783. This is land lying on the dividing waters of Eagle Creek and at the head waters of Swern Creek otherwise known as Shoemakers Creek. Adjacent land was owned by Robert Parker. Chain carriers and marker directors were Francis McConnell and Robert Parker. Surveyor was Roblsoad (hard to read). Certified by Thomas Marshall. Recorded November 17, 1795.

Thomas McConnell was born in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1807. His father (1773-1817) and brother were both named John. His mother was Mary McClinktock McConnell (1776-1830). Thomas was not born when his father gave a lot in 1807 to John (Jr.), Robert, and Susannah, the only children living at that time. After the father died the lot was held as her home by Mrs. McConnell until she died in 1830. The property, by law, would then go to Thomas's older brothers and sister, John (Jr.), Robert, and Susannah. A court cas was filed by Thomas (then 23 years old) to transfer fair shares to the younger children (Thomas and Samuel). The court awarded fair shares to Thomas and Samuel.
Thomas married Anna Bronson in c. 1833 who had lived in Cleveland, Ohio with an aunt because her parents had been killed by Indians when she was two years old. Thomas's activities included merchandising, loans to others (there were no banks), and land speculation. His brothers were also merchants. His trading was at Linn's landing and later at his own dock at Port Lavaca. We know that he was living in Linnville, Texas, in 1840. He probably witnessed the Great Comanch Raid of August 8, 1840 when 500-1000 Comanches attacked Linnville. They burned houses and wrehouses, but the people took refuge aboard a schooner anchored nearby. Many of thses settleres moved further up the bay to the new town callled Lavaca (later Port Lavaca) that was being developed by Thomas McConnell. The land at Port Lavaca was significantly higher above the bay than were Indianola and Linnvilee, which were closer to the coast. Frequent storms damaged most towns that were only a few feet above sea level, and many people were drowned during those storms. Anna Bronson McConnell and 5 year old Virginia Ann were listed on a ship's manifest as arriving at Lavaca in 1840.
