In 1717-1718 at least 5,000 people left Northern Ireland for the U.S. and most arrived in Philadelphia and Delaware. Among these are a group of McConnells, who we know were all related by DNA, who are the ancestors of tens of thousands of people. These people include Alexander McConnell, who lived by Octorara Creek, Chester Co., PA, Frances McConnell, probably related to Alexander who lived in Chester County at the same time, and William and James who lived in Augusta County, Virginia and moved soon afterward to North Carolina.
The first migration, then was touched off by a combination of drought, rack-renting, diminished trade in woolen goods, depression, and also religious discrimination and persecution. When the fourth successive year of drought ruined the crops in 1717, serious preparations began to be made for a migration.
There were five great waves of emigration, with a lesser flow in intervening years:
1717-1718, In 1717, at least 5000 Ulstermen left Northern Ireland. Jonathan Dickinson reported from Philadelphia in 1717, that there had arrived from ye north of Ireland many hundreds in about four months, and that during the summer we have had 12 or 13 sayle of ships from the North of Ireland with a swarm of people.
Around 1717 many people from Scotland and Northern Ireland came to the U.S. as a consequence of severe restrictions on people who were Presbyterians, property restrictions on
We have the DNA of descendants of the Alexander McConnell, who died at Octorara Creek in 1729, and we know it is very similar to the DNA of descendants of two early North Carolina McConnells-- Archibald and William. Based on this and the histories we have, we know they are closely related but the exact relationship remains lost in time. More information comes to light all the time and hopefully eventually we will have a clear picture of their relationships.
